I recall the Rosary Road site when it was the remains of the City football clubs ground..the old Nest. Some of the workings were opened after an air raid during the war. With one or two pals we went down one opening at the bottom of a large bomb crater. We were amazed at the extent of the tunnels , but didn`t go in too far. When I see builings there today I wonder how they will stand years from now being right on that area. Derek Holmes ,Norwich.

I don`t think there is anyway in now. The only way to find out would be to get in touch with the City Engineers Dept. at the City Hall. I asked them a question regarding the Ketts Cave area some time ago and they were very helpful . I understand they have details of almost all the old workings thats why I think that they would have the only access points (if any). You must realise that it could be very dangerous to let anyone wonder into them. My enquiry re. the Ketts Cave one turned out very interesting after being told a tale by a neighbour of mine. i`ll explain if you are interested and know the Norwich area. Derek.

Dave, No I haven`t seen the one at Harford and as I am now in my 80s Idon`t have much time for that but have always han an interest in these local things. Do you know where the site of Ketts Cave is ? If so do you know Gilman Road near the old Lazaar House library off Sprowston road leading to Mousehold ? I can tell you a little tale about that area if you are interested. Derek

Dave, The tunnel I mentioned ran from Ketts Cave, Under Silver Road Mousehold Avenue ,coming out at the bottom of a very large chalk pit at the rear of the Catholic church on Sprowston road. Long since filled in and now partially built on. A neighbour of mine some time ago was relating to me how her mother had been driven through there on a horse and cart many years ago. I would imagine that that must have been one of the longest in Norwich ,(unless you know otherwise). The city engineers dept. confirmed that this tunnel did exist. Derek.

Steady Derek, I understand your frustration about lack of any response but there are a number of factors at play here.
Firstly Norwich isn't a major mining location so there are few members continuing to add to the database or the forum. Second is the time of year with quite a few people away from their computers. Adding those factors together may well lead to a slow response.
That doesn't mean that your memories aren't appreciated though and, while I'm based in Hereford (another area not exactly famous for it's mines) I like reading about other areas.
So, thanks for your input and hopefully dave1964 will be back online soon. 🙂

I looked into this a while back and didn't get anywhere regarding legitimate access. However I remember being told that the local authority do carry out an annual inspection on the known workings.

I wasn`t getting at anyone Dave. It seems to me that there just isn`t the local interest these days. For instance when I received verification of the tunnel mentioned, one wag in the Engineers office said if there was any money coming out of this not to forget those in the office ! I replied saying that as they had all the records available it would be so easy for them to produce a small booklet on the theme which would no doubt sell very well. But have never heard anymore. They could have made a few bob...but there you are . Dumps. :smartass: :smartass:

Hi dumps just seen your post on here ( dont get much time to get on here!) but am very very interested on any info you may have on Norwich Mines. 2 are open at the moment plus one tunnels with 2 gated.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
