On December 20th, having a few minutes to spare when on top of Masson on my usual walk round the area, I strolled down into the top part of the quarry and was dismayed to see a large area of spray paint grafitti on a rock face above the main west quarry face. It looked very fresh and really disfigures the landscape. It would be great if someone could sort this out but I suppose it would be difficult to clean it off. It will just attract other mindless idiots if left.

Will do probably this Thursday as weather looks good.

I bottle of cheap supermarket bitter lemon and a wire brush. Start with the brush to break the paint, fill your mouth with the drink, spray it over the daubings and sit and wait a few minutes, then finish with the brush.

The citric acid in the drink reacts with the limestone.

;D

It is a fair-sized area that might require a large amount of lemonade and spitting on a scale not seen since the punk era!

Sounds like a job for Willy Wonka and his magic lemonade pressure-washer! But that's the only way I could think of doing it - drive one over with a 4 X 4, drop the hose down the cliff, and do it all off ropes (with just steam, not bitter lemon!). But it wouldn't be cheap hiring one of those for a day.

The 'offerings' to T'owd man tonight, a few of us locals will check it out. O.G.

It was not on the main cliff face but on an outcrop just above it on the west side so it would be relatively easy to reach. I did not have time to go round to inspect it but from 100 yards away, it looked c10 foot by 5 foot with various initials etc. Would be interesting to find the culprits.

Just got back. Weather was nice and had a good walk.

Got most of the rubbish off but there is a bit more further along which would really need a rope for safety.

Still, had a damn good go at it, would have been fun to meet the perps.

Cleaning off below. Look where the bottle is and see the effect.

View from the other side, weather should finish the job.

Very pleased that it has been sorted so quickly, thanks Roy. It was amazing how thoroughly a bit of vandalism like that spoilt the scenery.

Yes, I seem to be back on form.
I have just been awarded a Diploma of Honour as most promising kyu (coloured belt) grade student and dedication, to the art of aikido. I am very proud. Back at karate as well after some personal 'issues'.

I hope to get underground a lot over Christmas as well, my idea of a good Christmas.

I expect that normal people will be enjoying the festive season in normal and traditional ways.

Back on topic.
There is a rather prominent bit of paint daub further along on the same side of the quarry, but will need a rope in my view. It is immediately above where an old mans level breaks the through the rockface.

I think that the people who do this sort of thing see difficult and dangerous places as a challenge, I am thinking of the sides of motorways bridges etc.

On a tangential note, showing my erratic minds way of 'working' to a T, the wonderful Half Man Half Biscuit who have a lyric for every occasion come up trumps with:

Gouranga! Gouranga!
I'll not be happy 'till you've been arrested for defacing the bridge.

I will now get my coat :surrender:
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Hydraulic brake fluid would be worth a try, and if it works would wash off with water afterwards.

It stripped cellulose in the old days, we would be careful not to spill it.

Owd git,
Rather surprised that you didn't finish with the Derbyshire miner's toast" A good health to all mynes and maintainers of mynes."
Which as you doing a clearing up operation must be in the spirit of the toast.
Have a good festive season, we all need to come back to this toast in the new year, Roy not withstanding.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
