I was after some info on easy accessable mines in the peak district area. I don't have much experience with ropes and such . I have explored a few mines in past. such as Hendre, box mine, Middleton ect. Mainly for photography. Any info would be greatly appreciated . Looking to spend few days up in the peaks next weekend.

For easily accessible mines that don't need rope, there are quite a few options around Matlock:

There are lots of smaller mines in the Via Gellia, Groaning Tor level is a walk-in mine close to a footpath, further up the valley there's Dunsley Springs level, Slaley Sough and Spinney Level, again these are walk-in but can take some finding. Otherwise, there's Holme Bank chert mine at Bakewell.

I thought rope was needed to get in back of Masson?...

No, you can easily free-climb the route that takes you directly into Crichman. The coffin level route in does have a small (c. 4m) shaft but there's a fixed rope, or there was last time I went that way.

Been years for me but would like another look, but unsure about route.

So, quarry behind you, facing cavern and Beck Shaft, into the overhang and turn right, climb down at the end?

Unlike Box, you will not find paint, string, tea lights and other tat (or you shouldnt!). Navigation is quite easy with a survey to add interest. Please take a carrier bag to bring out any litter you find

Sounds about right to me. This is the climb down with someone stood at the bottom, a rope is handy on the way up but far from essential.

Yes, in retrospect I think my photo shows the fellow at the bottom nearing the top of the climby bit, but to be fair his feet won't be far off the floor :lol:

Masson, Wapping and Mouldridge are fairly close; the latter is a little to the south-east of the actual entrance in the valley bottom. Devonshire's location is a bit out - it's off the footpath heading up the hill from Upperwood Road on the right, there's an obvious "stile" leading to the entrance.

Unfortunately I'm busy this weekend otherwise I'd offer to act as guide!
