I went climbing today to Smalldale Quarry. There's an obvious admit in the quarry face. Does anyone know anything about it? I didn't have a torch so I couldn't explore.

Is that the Smalldale near Bradwell/Pin Dale?

If it is there, it's possible it could be connected to Pack of Meal or Lingard mine, which went straight through the current quarry site. It's on the end of Long Rake, with Bird Mine to the SW.

Sorry, I should have been more accurate with my location description.

No, the Smalldale Quarry I was meaning is the one south of Peak Forest, just east of Doveholes on the Batham Gate Road.

If its the one I'm thinking of, roughly across the road from where the pub used to be?, I had a look about 30/ 35 years ago, IIRC, it goes in about 60ft to a dead end. I did find a horses tooth in there though --.

I believe the Eldon P.C. had a poke in there with no success, its just like them at the time to have left the tooth in there.
Always remember, nature is in charge, get it wrong and it is you who suffers!.

Thanks for the info. As it's already been checked out, I won't bother, especially if it only goes 60'

That makes it sound like they were brawling down at the end of the level, which would fit with the tales I've heard of the Eldon of old!

The grate moor caving club Stockport dug a shaft out in that quarry in 1971 to a dead end 20 ft up the face we went in 10ft and down 20ft to a small bedding to tight to get in.

Thanks for the link. The article doesn't seem to mention any Smalldale mines. Smalldale may just be in the Peak Forest liberty.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
