Does anyone have any photographs of Amblecote Pit which was situated just outside the town of Stourbridge in the West Midlands?
As a boy I used to live a couple of miles away from it and I could see it on the horizon from my bedroom window.
After all this time I would like to see what it looked like close to rather than from such a distance.
By the time I was able to obtain the use of a camera the pit had been demolished. I've looked in what mining books I could find in various libraries but to no avail.
Anyone who might have any photos I can assure them that they are for my own interest and not for any commercial use.
Hope someone has one or two.

Regards

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be specific enough but the following site may be of some interest.
"http://blackcountryhistory.org/collections/search/?cb_ipp=25&fq%5Bpartner_code%5D%5B%5D=GB145&fq%5Bdc.subject%5D%5B%5D=Coal+mining&q=bank+banks&cb_submit=Search"
It may be worth giving the Black Country Society and the Black Country museum a bell just in case either have any photos tucked away in archives.
Good luck 🙂

Not my area really, but there is a picture of the area in 1930s on this page that appears to show a couple of head frames, not sure if its the correct ones though.

This lot are probably worth a try if no-one here can come up with one :-

Have as yet not been able to get further with my request for a photo but I have contacted the Amblecote Historical Society as recomended by another member of this forum so I await for any further info.

Thanks again and yes, they may have destroyed the Black country but not the its spirit.

Kindest regards and again thanks for your help

I was at a company based on Thorns Road, opposite the Thorns Community College a few weeks ago. One of the people I was training was a South African that previously worked in mining. I told him the hillside opposite was once a mining area, he laughed at that. So thanks for providing that link to the historical society photos, I sent him the link. 😉

Thanks for the reply.

The trouble is that most of the area has been completely changed by extensive open cast mining before redevelopment took place around the 1970's and it seems that any photographic records for the area are as rare as hens teeth.

The Blackcountry Living Museum have been extremely helpful and are continuing to look for details.

Thanks again.
