I've been assuming that South Yorkshire collieries would be considered to be in the Midlands region - is this correct? (I see some entries for mines in this area in the North East region which I would consider to be Durham/Northumberland).

Please put me back on the straight and narrow if I have strayed .

Ey up duck. As the probably say in those parts...

Ever met a Yorkshireman who'll claim he's from the midlands? I haven't and I've lived in each riding.

Everything north of Derbyshire is north on here, split by the Pennines.

Maybe the coal pits could be identified by the old NCB regions? North East, Yorks/ Notts/Derbys, West Yorks/Lancs, Staffs/South Derbys/ Leics, etc. etc.
I learnt these as a sprog, can't remember them all now, though do remember Kent!
I grew up in East Derbys, at a time when all school kids were destined to sell their soul to King Coal in one way or another.

The regions are arranged purely on a geographical basis, to seperate them again purely according to the mineral mined would mean reprograming the site I suspect...

As a South Yorkshireman in exile I guess I should be campaigning for Yorkshire to be an autonomous region in its own right.....but I won't do that, and certainly don't want to suggest that AditNow needs to be modified.

When I was in the 6th form at Wath Comprehensive School in S Yorks, our teachers set us a debate topic - "Do we live in the East Midlands or the north east?".

East Midlands won that particular debate.

It would help me to know what geographical boundaries AditNow uses. Where does "The North" begin?

Sorry - just spotted the anything north of Derbyshire is the geographical boundary - must learn to look properly!!

I'll modify the South Yorkshire mines I have added to the database and link them to the North East instead of the Midlands.

Actually just noticed that South Yorks is in the midlands according to this. Apologies.

Never noticed that page before.... should pay more attention.

Strictly speaking though, anywhere below Northallerton can be considered to be London.

Aah, that clarifies why you are now in Cleveland, I know a lot of folks who say they are from Yorkshire, it seems non of the b*ggers want to go back!

According to "der guvvamunt", Derbyshire is in the East Midlands, this creates some interesting debates between South Pennine Hill livestock Farmers and Cambridge Prairie Arable farmers, been there, done that, big trip to the middle of Leicestershire to get there though!! 😮

P.S. It should be "Aye Up Mi Duck", a greeting used on the East Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire Border. 😉 😉

Am I right in thinking that the word 'duck' is interchangeable with the word 'love', particularly when speaking to other geezers? 😉

Cleveland is part of Yorkshire btw, not separate to it. It's just the traditional name for the north-east corner of the county.

How did they get away with that??. 🙂

"Duck" is interchangeable with "Luv", a totally different term.

"Yorkshire Day" gets a mention each year on the calendar*, deminstrating the site's dedication to the cause of a county whose inhabitants (and exiles) believe was created by - and for - God himself.

* we do a calendar every year, y'know? At the moment we'd like people to send in fine photographs to be featured in this fine production... 😉

The general rule of thumb for all the mine entries for Yorkshire that I have entered are:
for sheet SK they are in the Midlands and for sheet SE they are in the North East.
Unfortunately there was no Yorkshire Region and at the time of entering there was no obvious choice of region for these mines.
Effectively the Yorks/Notts/Derbys Coalfield is all one large region, so should be treated as one.
Changing all the Yorks mines in SE (inc West Yorks) would take a fair bit of time, unless there is a fancy bit of code
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Thanks for the debate folks.

I am comfortable with Lee's statement that Yorks/Notts/Derbys form a logical grouping both in terms of geography and mining techniques/history, so I'll stick with Midlands for the old mines I am recording from the region where I grew up.

And where might that be? (if you don't mind me asking?)

Does it walk like a duck, and talk like a duck ? Then its a duck.
The Midlands is everything in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Northamptshire, Rutland, Gloustershire and Oxfordshire.
But personally I think Oxfordshire is not really a midland county, and Gloustershire is a western county.
if eight out of ten cats all prefer Whiskas
Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?
