Out on one of my walks recently and I've got two areas of unknown mines/veins.

Anyone got any ideas of the names of the various mines/rakes/veins etc?

Area 1 is a set of some shaft and mounds. Area 2 is an area with a number of rake/vein shallow workings

The triangle are mines that I've got names for

Unless Roger Flindall or Jim Rieuwerts have managed to put names to the veins or mines, I don't think it's very likely anyone will know. That's not to say there isn't something lurking in the barmaster's records (field name or mention of proximity of known mine) that might reveal but it is a long shot and most likely would need cross-referencing.

Incidentally, have you ever looked in Stone Dene? Interesting area, just watch where you're treading.....

I seem to have mis-placed some of those books for Derbys soughs etc; and the map I have as Newclose/Quickset in the bottom left corner (annoyingly). It is a bit of a long shot, but I don't like having unnamed mines although I know appear to have quite a few.

No, I've not been to Stone Dene (I will add it to the list), I appear to have done both sides of it. I also somehow missed the lime kiln by the road at Hopton - I think it's because the path has been moved and I had gotten a little bored of trying not to be hit by speeding lorries.

Do you know if the gated passage (and adjacent ungated passage) at Slinter Tor (opposite side of Via Gellia to Ball Eye Quarry) have been looked at (i.e. a mine or cave - I suspect mine)?

Roger Flindall covered the Slinter Wood area pretty well in the 1970s, the published results are in PDMHS bulletin 6:6. There are two workings that would fit your decription I know of, one is Owlet Hole and the other is un-named, both listed in the above article.

Stone Dene is rather like Marks Dale or Ible Wood, full of small uncapped shafts....

For the moment I have filed the workings as Slinter Tor (Owlet Hole).

I don't have the back copies of PDMHS - what happened to the long list of available back issues from the website? - It now only goes back to vol15

Sounds like some more sets of woodland which need investigating - there always seems to be things hidden away in the woods. And those along the Gellia most definately look in need of some investigation - but the slopes are usually steep and fairly slippy

So..... walking around some steep sided, slippery sloped woodland areas with plenty of holes to fall in to....... 😮 Safe??? Yep sounds ok to me - I've got one hand to hold on and one hand to take photos
