I came across a stone built in to a quarry wall at Barrel Edge Quarry near Cromford, Derbys.

The inscription is in latin and reads "Nil Desper E", I know Nil means nothing and Desper means despair/forbidden and the E can be a number of things.

Anyone know what it translate to.

Also there is a marked gritstone adjacent

I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

That's intriguing. I was tempted to suggest it was the boundary stone of property owned by Neil Desper, and the engraver, noticing he had left the E out, added it to the bottom. 😉

Could the E represent someone's initial? and the DESPER is simply an abbreviated DESPERANDUM?

That's my initial thought, "Nil Desperandum" certainly springs to minds.

It looks as if there should be another word to the right of Nil but without Doubt it's 'Never despair' as for the E ....Eric?

It is "Nil Desperandum Est" - literally "we must never despair" It is also the motto from the family crest of the Stewart Family
