Just a heads-up, reading on 28 Days, people have already been trying to dig through the blockage-and sounds like altercations with the farmer...guessing thats not gonna help things in *any* way 😞

Maybe anyone who is registered on there can post and urge people to stay away? Thats assuming people will listen of course

A package has been sent to the Drayton Estate which includes everything that they will need to consider a choice of access schemes based on the BCA Public Liability Insurance.
We await their decision.

Church was reopened and fitted with a grill in order to allow bat entry. Obviously, if a favourable decision is reached it could be modified.

The ironstone mines of the Slipton area comprise Willow Close, Crops Acre, Woodfield and Church mines and hold a great deal of interest to the mining community.
Rich in artefacts such as original miners footprints, miners picks, shovels, etc they are also of immense geological value in that they fit in a knowledge gap as the BGS memoir for sheet 171 (1963) has details for Sudborough, Twywell and Cranford but not in the area between.

Recently I forwarded a package to the Drayton Estate which included details plus all supporting paperwork for 2 robust access schemes based on the British Caving Association Public Liability Scheme.

Option #1 was the ‘standard’ arrangement whereby a group of individuals form an access group and obtain a Certificate of Indemnity in favour of the landowner which guarantees an indemnity up to £250,000 in the event of a successful claim. This is additional to the “Extension to Principals” clause in the insurance policy.

Option #2 was a novel idea whereby the landowners would itself become an “Access Controlling Body” member of the BCA, at a cost of a mere £50 per year. Key holders could of course be delegated.

Both schemes have been rejected by the landowner, and in my opinion the reasons given do not hold water.

The landowners stated intention is now to fit all of the entrances with grills that will comply with the relevant legislation pertinent to bat habitats.

I have seen this situation before and know full well where it going to lead. The same bizarre tug of war between landowners who wish to prevent access and those who turn up in the middle of the night armed with hacksaws, we have all seen this elsewhere in the past.

The whole thing is most unfortunate.

The delightful people at 28dL are already discussing how you remove bat grilles by force....Awwww were would we be without them...

Obviously, there are people who will force entry by various means. High Speed Steel hacksaws, or maybe the use of car scissor jacks to force bars apart and break welds. Or even petrol driven angle grinders purchased cheap of eBay.

There have been instances in the past of people removing grills completely by the use of a socket on the nut of the securing bolt and the use of a long socket bar possibly extended with a length of scaffold tube. I believe that the trick is to tighten up the nut until the bolt snaps flush with the rock.
Obviously, such behaviour is to be condemned.

And people wonder why owners of abandoned mines seal them for good. The only bars that the 28DL people should try and cut are the ones on their cell window :guns:
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

They do have some good points
They dont hack minerals out and leave rubbish everywhere, and they dont steal artefacts and relocate them to private collections in Dolgellau.

A while ago they visited Alltycrib and tidied up my rubbish from the digging projects.
Some of the photos on their site are wicked.

I have to speak as I find and they are welcome in any of the mines that I have a hand in.

As far as Slipton is concerned, I am out of the equation now.

"When you get the grill off you could use it as a barbie.

Claret would go well with the bats, and Chardonnay with the landowners pheasants.
Teach em to block our mines, grrr "

I wonder if the caving club people who were declined BCA equipped exclusive access will join the angle grinder gang, or the "nevermind, we have some good photos" gang.

I am a big fan of "the third way".

If it were my mine, and I read comments like that, I'd just order another load of concrete.

Absolute crime. Just got in to researching the industrial history of the area and this is a big piece. It should be a english heritage site. We don't value our history enough. The Americans would never allow this to happen.

I'm sure there is a lot of interesting history to the mine which goes back many years.
But unfortunately many people don't care about that. To them it is just another hole to have a look around. And it does not matter of the consequences of breaking gates to get in. Which makes entry almost impossible for the next person.
Then land owners seal up mines.

on the whole I'm glad we don't have the American attitude to "heritage" here. One thing for sure is that free access would become $20 access overnight, then cancelled in favour of an animatronic presentation.

Got talking to an american at my brothers wedding, straight away he asked about insurance, my reply was "Yes I always tell someone where I am going and we go through dodgy bits one at a time" 😉 He was somewhat astounded!
