This mine, I believe, was owned by my great great grandfather, Daniel Dent. One of his sons, William Dent, died working in this mine. Daniel also owned 13 cottages on Spa Lane, Woodhouse, which he walked to every Monday to collect rent.
If anyone has any more information I would welcome it, such as WHEN did he own it. How long was it a working mine?

Thanks for that information. I got my info from my gran who died in 2003, her maiden name was Edith Annie Dent. Daniel Dent was her grandfather. From my calculations he was probably born around 1850 as he had his first son, Arthur (my gran's father) in 1872 who was born in Neushall, Derbyshire. My gran told me that Dent's mine was at Mosborough which from the map seems to be very near Birley which is where you state that Dent's mine was. Do you think it's the same one? Daniel Dent's children, Arthur, Thomas, Johnny and William (who died down the mine) all worked for him down the mine. His eldest son, Arthur, died in 1932. Did the mine come to a natural end or was it sold out of the Dent family i wonder!

Thank you Andy for your reply. The Dent's main I refer to is near Mosborough/Owlthorpe just south of Sheffield off the A57. When Daniel Dent died he gave his eldest son, Arthur, 3 cottages on Spa Lane, (sometimes called Back lane) Woodhouse, just north of Owlthorpe so i was wondering at what point in my family's life did it close? Was it just a natural end or was it sold because Arthur had been given the cottages and did not need to work it anymore. Also was it my great great grandfather who first opened the mine and when? or was there someone else before him?

Hi,
I've just checked google maps and Birley is a different coal mine as it's just west of Woodhouse, Sheffield and Dent's mine is a bit further south near Mosborough. My grandma told me about Birley mine. At the end of Spa Lane, Woodhouse where she lived as a child she used to play on grassland called Sally Clark's then just beyond that, in a dip was Birley mine which she told me was closed, that would be approx 1913

Hi, thanks, after much trawling and looking for my magnifying glass I managed to read the entry. It is as you state -Birley Wood, Mosborough. I also found an entry in the accident/death list for William Dent but it can't be the same one as the year isn't right and the accident was at Birley East, owned by Sheffield Coal Co. If anything, it could have been Daniel's brother! not his son, but I don't have that information. Anyway at least I found it, thanks to my gran. She also told me that before Daniel owned the coal mine he owned Dent's Brewery at Burton-on-Trent so that's my next quest.
Many thanks for your guidance and help.

Hi Rockysue, not sure if you will see this after more than 8 years have passed, but Daniel Dent is listed on the Mosborough Census of 1911 as living at 28 Owlthorpe. He's 75 years old, a widower and former coal miner born at Newhall Derbyshire. Dent Main Colliery was started in 1920 and I believe was named due to Dent Lane passing close by.
