Hello,

Are there any good plans of Brownley Hill Mine at Nenthead? I'm hoping to go back in there in the next 1 - 2 weeks and the lack of a good plan (like those available on here for Rampgill and Smallcleugh) may prevent us from seeing some of the sights in there, especially the stone-lined engine chamber which could be the highlight of the trip if we could find it!

In the absence of a map the directions for the stone lined engine chamber are: Take first left after entry cross-cut, follow this a few low sections until you come to a slope on your left. At the top of this slope is a slide down through a narrowing - this is the connection to Haggs Mine. Part way through this is a rise that leads to the stone lined engine chamber. Its not the easiest of climbs so take care.
If you venture down into Haggs Mine beware of poor quality air.

Roy Fellows has done a very stirling job collating the WCMRG memoirs - which contain usable maps.
The Brownly white paper is erm....on the Brownley Section of this website and is a hugely interesting read. It helps put any modern "new" exploration of Brownley in context.
By the way, if Roy reads this - good job sir! your efforts have not gone unnoticed

Copies of the original Vieille Montagne abandonment plans are obtainable from the Peak District Mines Historical Society, their plan no C98, you could try their website.

Alternatively, Mr Mike who posts here has prepared coloured copies of all the Nenthead plans which he sells at reasonable price, you could send him a PM. Or just pop in to the Rampgill cafe and buy one from there.

The plan I have for BH is a cleaned up, redrawn version of the VM abandonment plan. With some added features, namely names of rises and sumps, however VM are not known for their great details on plans, and so you need to work hard to use the plan, as many of the sub levels are all drawn the same colour - it gets confusing!

Isn't it closed until easter? Also from Jan 1st 2009 the public toilets in nenthead, near the car park, are to be closed permanently by eden district council as a cost cutting measure 😞

that loo was a life saver today....touch wood when im up on new years day they might have forgot to lock them....nentheads effectivley a huge open plan museum its crazy to not have loos at such a large and cold place.

if its a hole explore it...

Mr Mikes plan is a bit hard to follow but once you have had time to get your head around the place it is quite usefull.

Dont get me started about eden district council the number of services they have cut in my area this year is stupid and all because they poured money in to a project that wents belly up but only after it had cut off there income from the land involved :curse:
