what are the wooden blocks on bars for just cable support or something else?

Yep, looks like it. If there were ever any of the old oil impregnated paper insulated cables there may be evidence of greasy spots at the shaft bottom or switchgear terminations?

after the climb up the scaff and as you go threw the air door into the tube ther is a load of hacked off cable in the door frame didnt look to close this time but will next time
think it was 3 strand and about as thick as my fist
