I was lucky enough last week to meet Gilbert Finlinson proprietor of Florence Mine who basically gave me cart blanche to wander the site hence the large number of pics I just posted, for which i am more than grateful.
It's an amazing time capsule and is in theory still an operating mine, is this Britains last Iron mine as he says?
And was this ever actually a museum? 🔗Florence-Iron-Mine-User-Album-Image-081[linkphoto]Florence-Iron-Mine-User-Album-Image-081[/linkphoto][/link]

Nice set of photos there Ian, interesting how the B&W ones make the place look many years older.

Did Gilbert say what his plans are for the mine?

Lee
The management thanks you for your co operation.

That was/is the sad thing, he had to rush off and just left me with the place having told me were everything was and told me how to lock up the winder after I'd done.
Our conversation was very rushed, He has something up his sleeve I think but he said nothing that told me anything solid.
I got the impression there was some recent controversy over the mine and that an attempt of a museum was made?
Sadly I have tried ringing him but I cant get hold of him to ask hence the post.
The B&W does make it look old, I had 1.5 hours there of no interruptions pure photography on my own.... bliss.

He seems a nice guy does Gilbert, he reminded me a little of old Mr Hartshorn at amber in his stoic views.
Guess I'll keep ringing on the off chance he gets in the office.

West Cumbria Mines Research group used to be based on site and had displays in the building by the lamp room and Gilbert's office.

Please Please thank him on my behalf... he was in a hell of a hurry to lock up and I felt guilty for keeping him... but he put sufficient trust to leave me to do what I like, I hope my pics did his mine justice!. He is a gent and said come again, I didn't get in the fan house and I deliberately didn't climb the winder as he had gone so did not want to expose him to any risk on my part.... which was only fair.... great guy and I really hope the mine survives.... Is the mine totally flooded now?
You def right he has something up his sleeves I felt...
One of best surface visits ever for character alone! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Minerat - When I first started caving in the Bonsall area way back in the early 1950's, one was met with shotguns at the "Park" by the Fountain pub, that is if one was able to ascend the Clatterway safely! As for daring to call in th' "King's Head" for a pint, well all conversation stopped until we drank up and departed. On hearing the kids and me were moving to Bonsall in late 1978 me best mate from Winster nearly died from shock, and that is when I learned the history and meaning of the saying "Bonsall, God Bless Ye", she claimed only idiots lived there because of the interbreeding and that is why the inhabitants needed blessing! Another friend told me that because of it's isolation in times past it had also been a penal settlement. The headmaster of the Anthony Gell school at Wirksworth called it a "no go area" and thought I needed my head examining. Need I go on? Sadly it's vastly changed now.

Anyway I thought the saying about a Derbyshire person was "Strong in th'arm and wick in th'head" and prided myself that it meant we were all brainy and clever, until I consulted my dictionary and found that "wick" meant "weak", the kids laughed at me for weeks after.

Could be related somewhere along the way to you! - my 6 x gt. grandparents were married in Bonsall church in 1701, prior to that my ancestors lived in Cromford, helped drive Longhead sough, and were involved in the disputes at Dove Gang!

See you mention Upper Wood, Matlock Bath and the mining there. Happy to say I've sent one of the spar miners who worked in that area in the 1950's (remember the washing plant on Lowe Mine?) a copy of Aditnow's 2009 calendar. He's over the moon with it.

Funnily enough, that's what Leek folk called me (as a "clay 'ed" ) when I worked there - potteries born potteries bred etc.!

Hi Sougher. My grandad was the blacksmith and master farrier at the bottom of clatterway, he lived opposite the pub, He lived on arter hill for a while, I used to live behind the cross, just off the walk over to arter hill from the cross. I was only 3 then remember it like it was yesterday. I used to live in upperwood and remember the mine working quite well, and old "fishy" greenwood who had cattle in the same field as the mine,(how much lead was in the milk God knows) I remember a lot of mining activity around the area when I was younger. names like Jack Beck, Barton & Banks, (must put it all on record one day) There are still a lot of my distant relatives living in Bonser even now. I still go down the mines, abseil down shafts and all mad stuff like that even though I`m nearly 68, good life is an active life...specially down in da dark places.
Nice to hear from you mate
