This is an image showing the various shapes of pit checks to be found. Apart from three or four tub motties, all the checks are from the Yorks coalfield.

As pointed out, the check was the miner's personal number for the time they were employed. When a man left the pit, it would eventually pass to a new employee. When you collected your wage you quoted your check number (or sometimes used a pay check) Hope this helps...

Hi, I have just won a miner's tag on ebay and wondered if anyone might know how I go about tracing who it belonged to.
It is from Creswell Colliery (Derbyshire) and has a number in it. I have a big interest in this colliery, and would dearly love to find out who it belonged to.
Any ideas would be great thanks.

Keep watching for Creswell checks, you'll find many pits used them in different shapes, Creswell was no exception...good luck.

A fine example of a tally board, as previously mentioned, although in everyday use all the tally's would have been the same shape.

Thanks exspelio, I've normally got a pretty good memory, but can't for the life of me remember where this board came from, but I "think" it was Newmillerdam pit, near Wakefield.
Cheers... đŸ™‚
