Hi Morlock,

An interesting aerial shot there, however, the area that I think that you are referring to are the former workings for the cement works at Irthlingborough. The ironstone was mined over quite a large area between Irthlingborough & Finedon, commencing a way further north than the chalk quarry. As far as I know, there has been no subsidence from any of the mine workings at Irthlingborough.

Very interesting to scan a field or so west from the cement quarry, where you can see the overgrown final gullets of the Wellingborough ironstone quarries. Despite the manifold changes over the years, there are still many interesting remains to be seen in the area.

Cheers

Alan

No. What you are showing are the Limestone pits works by opencast. If you want to see the the area of Irthlingborough mine subsidenceareas go to my Web site www.apack1.co.uk
and click on abandonment plan or just type in Irthlingborough & find a link in Wikipedia.
There were two completely separate mines Irthlingborough & Thingdon. Thingdon is the mine where a hole went down on the touch line one Saturday afternoon. the abandonment plan will also give an indication where the tunnels were at Finedon. There were two tunnels & I understand some hooligan has recently taken the pennies sunk into the concrete lintel of one of the tunnels instead of just taking a photo & leaving well alone. They are worthless now!! I don't think you can get to the eastern most tunnel but evidently the other tunnel is accesible.

Hi Ragl,
I didn't see your post when I put my post regarding the mines in the Finedon & Irthlingborough area. Actually there is quite a lot of subsidence over Irthlingborough Mine and it can be seen on Google Earth when you know where to look. (the robbed out areas)

It's very much shooting season round the mines at the moment so if you're thinking of going to see them you may be best to wait until it's over on February 2nd to avaoid disappointment. There's a shoot that takes place right by one of the adits. I'm happy to act as a guide as I know the places well. In all honestly I doubt I'll be able to do anything until February anyway.

I hope not! Shooting takes place no more than three yards from one of the adits so if you were to poke your head up at the wrong moment it would make for a bad end to a trip. There's a recently deceased pheasant just inside the same adit which looks like it was shot and fell in there. Best not to antagonise the gamekeeper anyway so waiting until February is probably the sensible thing to do. Besides we're going to be up to our neck in snow by the end of the week so trips might not even be possible for a while. 😢

Hopefully by February all the snow will be gone... I'm very happy to lead a small group around one of the mines, there's some good stuff to see and plenty of photo opportunities. Remind me mid-January and we'll pin down a date.

Just to make things 100% clear, this will NOT be a trip to Irthingborough which is well sealed. It will be Ironstone though.

Hello Remoteneeded

A trip would be much appreciated if you're still up for showing us round. February is looking busier now ::) but still a chance of skipping off for a day at the moment 🙂

Is jan 30 too soon?
