Hi all, newbie here. I'm busy restoring a miner's safety lamp which was gifted to me almost 40 years ago and (I'm ashamed to say) has lived neglected in a cupboard ever since.
I know something of its history. It spent its working life at Boldon Colliery in Co. Durham (as was - now South Tyneside) the place I was born and raised as did the donor now long since deceased. The donor was allowed to keep the lamp on his retirement.
The lamp is the genuine article and I believe I know its date of manufacture but hope that someone here can confirm.
The bottom flange of the housing for the glass is stamped 57/275(8 or 9) so can I assume 1957?
The plate on the bonnet has been polished so much in the past that the only visible number is the tally number 55 which matches the number stamped into the reservoir and visible once the glass housing is removed. Also faintly visible on the bonnet plate is GR (I'm assuming GR8 but would this be correct?
Anything anyone can add to this info would be appreciated. I have photos but not sure how to post them.

Hi Pete, welcome to AditNow

Congratulations on owning such a nice artefact, GR- sounds like a Protector lamp, manufactured in Eccles, Manchester. Pretty common but very nice well-made lamps. A genuine colliery lamp will probably have some nice dinks and scrapes to add to its patina of age.
