Hi. If you're interested in this sort of stuff and want to get involved with exploring local sites, you might want to make contact with the Shropshire Caving and Mining Club who are very active in the area. I'm a member of the club though not much use currently due to being out of the UK until next summer, though there are other members knocking around the site.

Thanks for that, I will take a look at their site
On leave this week, decided to spoil my wife and take her to 'Big Pit' tomorrow. After looking at this site, I suspect it may be a little tame for some of you guys.
Cheers.

My Daughter loved her trip to Big Pit with her school, and she's been to a a few of the bigger mines with me beforehand so it's probably quite enjoyable for the family. Enjoy!

Big Pit is a very well presented "show" mine, and to be able to look around a coal mine is a rare opportunity these days. I would happily visit it again. Go while the guides are still retired miners who dug the stuff to put bread on the table.

Just returned from our trip.
Excellent underground tour, plus some very interesting exhibits and mine buildings.
It's left me wanting more, now have my eye on the museum in Wakefield.

There's short underground tours going on at Snailbeach mine nr Stiperstones this Sunday (16th). Plus there's lots of surface stuff to look at and the chance to speak to members of the SCMC and the Shropshire Mines Trust. Recommend taking a look if you're in Shropshire this weekend.
