There aren't many mines in Scotland - where is your road trip going to take you?

Welcome Erik!

As ChrisJC says, Scotland is better known for midges than mines. But there are some mines there if you look hard enough. If you're prepared to head south a little way over the border there are a lot more options.

I would love to see some of the iron mines in Sweden! I hear they are very impressive.

They truly are! As too the gold mines, copper mines and various other *big* holes in the ground...and they all seem to be happy and willing to accommodate visitors, which is great. You cannot beat Swedish hospitality

Welcome to AN anyway Erik

Yeah, but how many of those are:

1) collieries
2) shale pits
3) trials
4) opencast

Don't get me wrong, there are explorable mines in Scotland well worth visiting. Just not very many.

Aren't there some fairly extensive stone mines?

If you should ever find yourself down the other end of our island (Cornwall) there's lots of mines to choose from both inland and coastal.
If you are SRT capable, then there are one or two pretty spectacular sites too. ;)

Enjoy your trip anyway, Scotland is magnificent.

Hi Erik. There are a good number of metal mines in Scotland but many have been filled in by land owners with only surface remains. One mine open to the public is in the village of Wanlockhead in Dumfries and Galloway. There is a list on this site of some of the mines, Use 'Information And Resources', click on 'General Interest', then scroll down a some way to 'A Gazetteer to the Metal Mines of Scotland' it is dated 2/9/14. Hope this helps and you have a great trip. JL

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
