I've just heard that the application was unanimously refused by the planning committe yesterday, and some of them were quite critical of it, the person who informed me mentioned the phrase "more holes in it than a swiss cheese" was used by one councillor....

Well, there's good news from one aspect - but the destruction of the Powerhouse can't be reversed, so it's a pretty poor outcome overall.

There are still two other buildings in the BLF style on site, plus the kilns with the huge "A" buttresses, and EH have said they still consider the group to be of national importance so we may yet see statutory protection.

AR - which of the buildings was the Power House please? I know that there are quite a few photos on the website, but I can't find which one it was.

Thanks.

This one:

ie, the one that you'd really, really not want to be lost.

If the others has been flattened and this one kept, it would have been just about acceptable. To have lost this one is a disaster.

It was as far as we know the last one bearing the BLF mark, and in a strange echo of the Egyptian temples they were modelled on, the chiselled-out initials of the former manager Thomas Ryan - like a disgraced Pharaoh, it seems the company tried to erase the memory of him after he left to a rival!

Now needlessly demolished, a victim to greed....

This photo of Iclok's clearly shows the removed initials:

Another website to view photographs of the five Cowdale buildings that needed listing is:-

Looking at the interior photos taken of the Power House, it didn't seem to be that unsafe!

I've just been told that EH have now scheduled the remaining structures on the site, so even though the "jewel in the crown" has gone, the two other BLF buildings and the butressed kilns have statutory protection.

Unfortunately, it won't bring back the unique building that they flattened.
