Hi, am interested in any memories of South Crofty and Wheal Jane tin mines in the early 1970s (approx 67-73 or 74), and who anyone who remembers my stepfather John Williams, he would have been about 34-39, from White Alice Farm, Carnmenellis near Stithians Reservoir.

I worked down Crofty in the early 1970's, I don't recollect the name you mentioned but then I didn't know everyone.

Thanks Lozz, I seem to remember John and another bloke working with a submarine door behind them .. they were drilling from South Crofty into East Poole mine which they knew was flooded. I have a photo somewhere. I'll upload it when I find it. Thanks again. Gerry

I worked mainly on the 310 fathom level, there was a dam door on 310, on 310 (behind the dam door) they were tunneling towards East Pool to break through after it had been drained down to that level, I was there on that gang doing general OC work and putting in some timber setts where the ground was a bit soft, the drillers on that job then as I remember were Chris Jarvis and his mate who I think was Alan Harvey, there might have been another drilling crew possibly, can't say for sure.

I was there when they did the final blast, and then the following day when Neville Ebsworth (mine manager) came to inspect the break through.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
