Hi, I'm not a explorer of old lead mines, well not since I was a bored teen poking around the Gaulan / Rhoswydol mines that riddle the hill facing my home. I have read a few books about the better known Dylife mines, still not a long walk from home, but I am interested in probing what else is known about these old mines. In my lifetime I would think about 1/4 of the remaining archeology has already been lost - flattened by diggers which is alarming given that ain't yet 35 years. The mines were abandoned over 100 years ago, not a great deal seems to be known about the smaller mines by me, though I must say the books on Dylife by Michael Brown have been very interesting reading.

The definitive books are
The Old Metal Mines of Mid Wales by David Bick
There are 6 volumes.
I think No4 may cover your area but have a look on Mikes website.

Or this for techno-files.

For smaller mines and trials not covered in Bick's books, the following book will be found very useful: J.R.Foster-Smith "The Mines of Montgomery & Radnorshire" (British Mining no.10), Sheffield: Northern Mine Research Society, 1978.

If you are really serious, then this book will also be useful: O.T.Jones "Memoirs of the Geological Survey: Special Reports on the Mineral Resources of Great Britain: vol.20: Lead and Zinc: the Mining District of North Cardiganshire and West Montgomeryshire", London: HMSO, 1922, reprinted Sheffield: Mining Facsimiles, 1986.

Both reasonably often available from specialist mining history booksellers with online listings.

The BGS memoirs have been digitalised and are available on line. I downloaded them all so have not kept the link, but Google should turn them up.
