Hi, we are thiniking about spending our holidays in Britain the next year. Could you suggest me some interesting areas where is possible to spend about week by exploring mines?

North Wales :thumbsup:
Lots of Slate mines with simple access.

Nenthead
Again lots of underground with simple access.

Cornwall
Lots of history and buildings but underground a bit limited without local contacts.

Derbyshire, Yorkshire Etc.
All good but need local contacts.

Thank you for your suggestions. We would prefer no need of local contact. Could you recomand some place where to start (e.g.: mine, systeme of mines, surrounding of town) for the first two areas you mentioned?

There's quite a lot of mines that are open access around Matlock Bath in Derbyshire.

Another vote for North Wales.

Staying in Betws y Coed gives you easy access to Blaenau Ffestiniog mines (Slate) and the mines around Betws y Coed itself, (Lead etc).

Searching for the ever elusive Underground Titty Bar.

Well the Slate in North Wales is all simple access.
Very little is sealed although some of the big quarries in Blanau Festiniog are still worked.
Cwmorthin needs a phone call to get the combination for the lock.
Miles of surface walks all on open access land.
All the information you will ever want is on this site if you search around.
There are also metal mines in the locality but too many to detail here.

Thak you for all your suggestions. North Wales looks interesting. Is possible to effectively travel there around using public transport or it would be better to go by car? Could you send me link to some
timetables? We have the first oportunity to have our holidays in the middle of February but we`re wondering about rains which could increase the water levels underground. How is the weather at that time?

hi,youd be daft not to come to the most beautiful part of Britain which is YORKSHIRE alternatively if you want a dull and boring week theres always Lancashire! wensleydale,swaledale,arkengarthdale full of mines and mining activity,hope wherever you go you have a great time.;D

A car would be better!

Rains wouldn't make much difference as the accessible levels of mines are those that are not already flooded and drain themselves.

There might be a bit more water getting into the mines, but it gets out again and the water level remains (almost) the same through the year.

...except for "Sheep Adit" at Benallt. Wading through cold mutton broth over welly depth is bad enough, but over critical depth...? Lord its bad.... 😢

I would recommend hiring a car if possible. I use buses and find it a real hassle carrying lots of kit on them, especially on the way home after a trip when everything is muddy or dripping wet. Public transport in rural Britain is far from ideal with regard to routes and frequency, especially on Sundays.

Just one more question: How is it with sleeping outside in Norht Wales?
For royfellows: Thank you for your invitation. Of course we'll have proper equipment and let mines including gates 🙂 in the same state as before our visit.
