Hi there,

I would start with a builders hard hat, some old walking boots or wellies, a boiler suit, an ebay chinese 1200lm head torch and spare battery set, and a willing companion/guide!

The in the future you can upgrade if you decide you like it, i wouldnt worry spending a fortune until you are sure it is for you!

Good luck!

I would also note that always carry a spare torch, mars bar, some water and a reflective blanket in a backpack just incase the worst should happen.

Also always make sure to tell someone where you are going and what time you will be back so if something goes wrong cave rescue can come get you.

Depends a bit on what kind of mine you are thinking of exploring but it addition to what has already been mentioned, always take a spare light along, especially if you are going for the cheapo type of lamp
If you are in mines with much water over welly depth you will find a pair of neoprene 'wetsocks' makes life a lot more comfortable.
The most important thing is to find someone familiar with the mines you want to look at, until you get to know what to expect.

Where are you located?? there might be "easy" mines closeby for you to "learn" in without too much damage to yourself (and others)
Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.
