Anyone thought of sonar for it, you could get a picture without being able to see, might make operating / driving it a little more interesting too.
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Ahead of you sorry! I have a FishFinder off my old boat which I thought we might try at some point but things like that are way off at the moment. Don't want to confuse the pilot with too many jobs too do at once!

@Blober... Does Jemima have capability to switch on/off additional electrical kit / circuits? Was thinking about additional lighting today; we might nit want to power it from the main batteries? The other thought was that any additional lighting could be made very lightweight, no need for any heat sink provided the lights were only used when submerged.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

There are currently 4 unused cables plumbed straight into the arduino board that await any kind of modification or extra payload. You can program them in for whatever use you see fit. I suppose i'll have to start looking into it eh? ::)

I have found this thread fascinating - cutting edge mine exploration.

Would it be possible to start a dedicated "Jemima" thread to keep us up to date with ongoing developments (and indeed fill in a bit of background).

I think as our adventures progress we'll start a thread, once some of the kinks have been ironed out, and some more confidence gained everyone can be kept apprised of what we find!

The kinks and how you sort them are the interesting bit.

I also received one through the same community that sent one to Blober. We're almost done construction and will be taking it on a trip exploring the mines of Nothern Ontario this summer.

I have no experience of ROV's, but does anyone know if there is a different thruster design to using propellers - I am thinking along the lines of a more passive one that does not stir up the silt. So that confined spaces like in a flooded mine etc... don't get murky.

I work with commercial work- class ROV's and a 2 man deployable AUV and propellor type thrusters are standard fit. You may be thinking about some form of water jet? That would add complication in terms of ducting (which takes up space) and adds weight. Motor driven (either electrical or hydraulic) props are easily repaired / maintained and replaced with off the shelf parts too. Jet skis have the space to use a jet, and do so for reasons of safety, in effect it's a high speed impellor type pump, but still engine driven and encased in a tube. Space and weight not really an issue on a jet ski. Fine speed control over the thrusters and careful piloting is the answer to minimise silt disturbance - but of course easy to say rather than do!

I'm curious about the navigation for this vehicle - does it have a gyro compass fitted? I would be curious to see the nav using a standard compass in an Iron mine 😉!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
