Hi,
how exact is the Grid Reference? Does it make sense to transfrom it into coordinates and use it to search entrances of mines or not? I'm from abroad and we don't have anything like this here....

The classic 6 figure Ordenance survey grid ref is accurate to 100 metres. The more numbers the more accurate.

Grid ref is only as accurate as the person who entered the mine on the system. Most that I have used do seem to be pretty good....good enough to get you in the "right corner of the right field." Just be careful that the Grid refs that you use are on the same projection as the map or digital model that you use. Most Grid refs are to OSGB1936 but if you plug those straight into, say, a GPS without telling it that they are OSGB36 then you will end up out by miles (varies depending on what part of the world you are in). Different grid/co-ordinate systems are based on different ideas of how big and what shape the world is....

I'm not sure if is my GPS able to use grid, so I'll might prefer to transfer it into classic GPS coordinates. Is following link the right one to use?

A 6-figure NGR can be misleading by up to 140m if the location is at the extreme NE corner of the 100m square.

It's only accurate to 100 metres North and East as anything South and West is in another 100 metre square.:smartass:

I'm looking at this on my phone so can't see too well but it looks ok! Enter grid ref and it gives you co-ordinates which should be OSGB36 (the web site should tell you) and Lat/Long, either of which your GPS should accept?

Something like SH123123 (6 figure) is accurate to a 100m square.

Something like SH12341234 (8 figure) is accurate to a 10m square.

Assuming that a 6 figure grid reference is correct, you should have no problem in finding the location, although it might take a few minutes.

If you're travelling from a long way away, then it's worth asking locals for more specific details if you are unsure; or better still getting a local guide.

You can put an OS grid reference into Streetmap
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
Then use the Convert Coordinates link at the bottom of the page to give you full grid coords, Lat and Long etc.
