I'm so behind the times that the concept of a solar charger seemed quite novel 😉 but picked up one of these recently and it seems a really useful bit of kit if you've forgotten to charge something.

Leave it soaking up the sun and then detach the battery unit, it's got a plethora of adapters and worked perfectly for me the other day when I forgot to charge my phone.

Well I was impressed!

Mr RL forgetting to charge ... A novel concept

But, yep I suppose it could be useful. Is there any info regarding what it is capable of charging ? Could it charge a sten battery ?

STANDBY FOR ACTION!!!!...

Haha!

Well, the battery has a capacity of 2200mAh but an output voltage of 4.5 to 5.5V so it's just half a volt to low to power the Sten (6 to 18V) 😞

The solar panel detaches, and then you've got a pocket sized battery pack / recharger full of harnessed sun-juice.

But admittedly no use at all if you've forgotten to charge the battery pack with the solar panel before going down the mine 🙂

Might sound like a stupid question, but here goes ... if you are down a mine, would this solar panel work with candle or torchlight?

I've no idea, need somebody cleverer than what I am to answer that. Or I could go test it 😉

It would work, which is to say a tiny amount of electricity would be produced, but not enough to be of any practical use.

You can be sure that as soon as photoelectric cells become really efficient (hasn't happened yet, but we're getting there), they'll all be using them when the sun comes out.

Which reminds me: wot sun? Your best bet is just carry a spare battery, and remember to unplug your Stenlight when it goes back in the pack, to avoid flattening the battery and shortening it's life.

Cheers,
