Hello everybody! I recently bought a davy lamp from a market in the Netherlands.
Because I am totally new with these lamps, I'm uncertain how some things work.

As a start, can somebody help me identify my lamp? Until now I could only guess that it is a Wolf lamp.


Could somebody also tell me something about the wick? In several videos on YouTube, I saw that there is a permanent wick inside, with a smaller wick on top of it. Assuming that this is the case with all lamps, I gave it a tug (wick was on the short end) but it felt like I was pulling a quite large piece. Do all lamps have 2 wicks on top of each other?

The wick issue may be because someone has previously failed to understand the 'two wick' thingy and pulled the long wick up in error?

A lot of continental lamps look like wolf lamps. As far as I know only Protector have lamps that have two wicks. Chances are your lamp will just have one wick, pull the wick up slightly and trim it so fresh wick is showing. If you can, post a picture on here so we know what lamp you have.

Is that a "Baby Wolf"? Looks very much like it except that the base is usually flared out like an elephant' foot to make it more stable if you put it down. Mind you there are so many different models it's mind boggling! :blink:

In the picture, you can see the mark of the company. Does anyone recognize it?

This lamp from my collection has the same marking on the underside. I believe it is from Poland.

Also this lamp has the same marking on the bottom. I believe it dates from 1986 - that is the date on the glass, and it has an '86' following what I believe is the serial number stamped on the brass at the top of the base.

Beautiful lamps! It looks like they have the same base as mine. Do you have only one wick inside? Did you ever have to change the wick?

The lamp with the slotted bonnet looks like a LB1A lamp from Poland (as you say). The addition of the slotted bonnet was a modification of the LB1 lamp.

The second photo of a lamp with just the gauze looks like a LB1. These were manufactured by Electro-metal, Zieszyn (EM) in Poland under licence from Friemann & Wolf (it is very similar to their type 400 lamp). The engraved mark on the base of the lamp can also read as "EM" with "Cieszyn" written underneath all inside a rhombus.

If there is a number engraved on the brass plate on top of the bonnet this should match the number engraved on a a brass plate on the side of the base and it is a "tally" number.

A few years ago when all the collieries in Belgium closed a lot of LB1 lamps could be found for sale in shops adjacent to the former pits.

Looks a bit like a Marsaut?

Hard to identify the first lamp from the photo (is it 11 3/8" tall?)

It looks like it has a Marsaut type bonnet and the relighter appears to be the same as the Friemann & Wolf type 400. In many respects it is very similar to the Wolf 7R or 7RMBS type lamps. That relighter will work in LB1, Premier and Wolf 7 lamps.

The makers mark could be that of the Polish Electro-metal, Zieszyn company (I've seen the same mark on a LB1A lamp like your lamp with the slotted bonnet), but can't find a definite example in any of the relevant books.

Looking more closely at the third lamp, on first glance it looks like an LB1 (as I mentioned earlier), however, it only appears to have 4 standard wires around the gauze. A genuine LB1 would have 5. So it has been modified at some point to look like a LB1 - a few years ago "German" looking lamps (without bonnets) were popular as they commanded higher prices. So a lot of lamps had their bonnets removed!

I think my lamps have only one wick, but then I have never fiddled with the wicks on either lamp.
