By accident I hit a thread somewhere on the Imolent DX80, which with a claimed maximum output of 32,000 lumens makes it the worlds brightest torch. Being used to some of the stuff from China I was somewhat sceptical, but reading some reviews it seems it actually does what it says on the tin.

The usual HK sellers are selling them for over $300 US, but I hit an eBay seller offering some for £205 GBP, just for the fun of it, I bought one. It arrived early today, delivered by TNT. No charges to pay. Good seller.
Importing is something of a lottery in that you can be unlucky and get charged VAT, but it is a lottery as I said.

When these things arrive you have to unscrew and remove a plastic disk that isolates the battery, I did this and put it on charge.
The charger is US plug, so you need either an adaptor or do as I did and simply use a shaver socket.

I came to test it in my hall which is biggish and has white walls. I clicked it up to max and thought "If this is 32,000 lumens then I am Chinese". Went back to the manual and it seems that it needs a double click to engage Turbo, the 32K.
Tried it again and blinded myself. Advice, dont try it indoors.

It does have a strobe, which I personally hate and regard all the flashes as a silly nuisance, however it is well hidden on this torch, its a second double click after Turbo, so from Turbo you can simply press and hold the switch down to turn the torch off without having to suffer any annoyance. The Chinese are learning.

The charging was no problem, its reported on Candlepower Forums about chargers going kaput and it seems to relate to those with a green plug. Mine was black and worked OK.

There is an in depth review here:
http://budgetlightforum.com/node/56217

I tried the ordinary max of a claimed 13K against a Lynx X_12 which is data sheet 7K and the Imalent was definitely putting out more, a lot more.

I will have to try it out underground and I will then get back on it.

On the face of its useless for any practical purpose being far too big and heavy and the 32K is ridiculous. However, I can see it being a lot of fun, until the novelty wears off.
I can see possibilities though for search and rescue

I think myself lucky to get one for the price I paid and it to clear customs without a VAT bill, others may not be so lucky.

I have another torch coming which is more practical and looks very good. I often get asked about torches and will do a proper review on that one.

EDIT, a bit more.
The batteries are 8 18650 working at 16V, so they will be 2 parallel by 4 series. The charger is a 19V laptop charger. The emitters are 8 X Cree XHP 70 2 s. My guess is that they will be 2 X 4 in series with a boost driver. I hope very sincerely that the 2 arrays are driven separately not in parallel, a Chinese habit. But of no intention of dismantling this one as long as it works OK. Messing in this way invalidates a guarantee, and its too dear a job.

The batteries are in a sealed pack and are obtainable aftermarket, Kaidomain have them in stock

It looks like that could come in handy for photography in very large chambers with dark walls!

Hi Margot, I will be trying it underground and reporting back. I dont pretend to be an ace underground photographer but I always find light distribution more important than a single source in open spaces.

Thinking about it, I am wondering if this is the start of a trend, Fenix are producing more powerful torches. I hate to think of the effect of hitting someone with 32000 lumens full in the face at night. It is a potential weapon.

That is the idea of the strobe mode, to dazzle someone for long enough so you can run away.

It would do it well enough on full power anyway. I think I prefer my karate and aikido.

There is a punching and blocking technique I like to show off with which is that fast you only see a blur and hear the bones cracking in my arms, some on here maybe seen it.
I am allowed to show off, I was 73 last month.

Run away??? Leaving behind a 200 quid torch??? No man points for you today ;D

Just hit them with it. But obviously you'll have to say something as you do, like, erm, "Time you had some illumination" or "Let me throw some light on the problem", or "Just gonna reach out and torch you" or "This pain will be light" or any one of a number of others.

Edit: Another one -"oooh you're a torchy subject".

I have just been outside and tried the thing, although not yet properly dark. Its totally incredible. I still dont know what use it is, but I am chuffed to death with it.

Thinking about it, out on fells on a dark night it would be possible to identify landmarks with that much light. Food for thought, bit heavy to carry, but still.

Its not a real focused beam though, more a directional flood, which is what i expected with those emitters.

I guess it had to happen someday - a torch that is brighter than my caplamp.
Bring it to NAMHO Roy, we can compare.

Yes but yours is still the brightest caplamp, you wouldn't want to wear this thing on your head.

What was it I said in my original posting:
"The usual HK sellers are selling them for over $300 US, but I hit an eBay seller offering some for £205 GBP, just for the fun of it, I bought one."

The last one is for sale, but price increased to £275.

Here it is:

There are some cheaper ones on there, I casually hit a £237 offer. All beats the website HK sellers.
