The Youle headshells are from around the 1960s and certainly no later than the 1970s. They are much older than the batteries which are probably from the 2000s. The battery boxes also look younger than the headshells.

The internal components of the headshells are different from Oldhams and most of the components cannot be exchanged between the two makes.

An issue with headshells when they get up to around 40 or more years old (whether Oldham or Youle) is that the wiring cast into the headshell deteriorates and no longer carries an electrical current. As the wiring is cast-in, it cannot be repaired or replaced.

Is your reflector plastic or aluminium?

When you unscrew the bezel, look for very fine black dust on the threads and also inside the headshell. If there is such dust then the headshells were at some point used in a colliery.

They are antique junk that someone has modified with an alarm type battery.
I would throw it away if I were you!

Sorry.....

I believe that particular type was identified on another forum as being manufactured for fire brigade use (70s-80s), as part of (or for use with) BA kit? I would recommend a new 6 volt battery and modify it for LED light source.

At least 12 numbered units in the image so not a 'one of' mod?

Edit: Concur the battery is not OEM.

At risk of appearing unkind, I don't know why people bother messing with such junk.
If you want a back up light, why not just a cheap headtorch?

If you want robust and waterproof and suitable for underground use, pay a bit more an buy Fenix.

Unless you enjoy tinkering for tinkering's sake (no bad thing) I would say the best place for the lamp is in a skip. Lighting technology has moved so far and fast in the last few years that there really is nothing to be gained in using 20th century lighting, particularly as part of your main rig. There really are much better options out there.

That said if you are determined to use the lamp go for it and more power to your elbow.

thankyou for all your replies regarding to the headlamp...

Im not going to be using the Youle lamp that it came with as i have oldham that im converting to run leds i only really bought the lamp to reuse the battery box on it as i could fit a decent size battery in it.

i was hoping that someone could tell me how these where mounted to their belts if not i will have to build a custom belt mount.

many thanks

If there are no belt loops on the battery box it's highly likely that they were carried in a pouch on a webbing harness or BA set.
The short cable also supports this possibility.

Aluminium boxes with screw on lids that meet IP67 immersion standard are available from people such as Farnell, RS etc.

I once saw a similar set-up that was slung in a pocket on a belt,
Chuck the lead acid and fill it with 18650's.
