Just to get it all right.

Pick a sexy looking Chinese torch that they sell for about £5, get it custom etched as part of a quantity discount order, "SAS Nightfighter 5000" or similar. Offer it in a presentation case, ( seen this somewhere before 😉 ), together with a charger or whatever.
Advertise it massively discounted ( so what was the original price?) "buy now while stocks last", get your mates to praise it on facebook and some pratt off TV to endorse it, then see the money roll in.

This was done years ago with watches. Cheap gold plated with expanding bracelets and some fancy Italian name. They bought a full page ad in Vogue advertising them for £450, then their sellers hit the streets with the copy of Vogue and offering the watches for £80. Probably cost £10 get made.
I remember them well.

You can buy LED's very cheaply and build your own super bright LED torches for less than £10, pack of LED's less than £2 for 50 LED's delivered and you can use any batteries to drive them. My preferred choice is the smaller lead acid cells of around 4.5 amps as they come free and are compact. Using 3mm LED's I can build a 9 LED torch with two continual days of light.

What everyone is missing here is that this is no ordinary five quid chinese torch it is a "tactical" torch. Quite what this means I am not sure (unless it means that it is black). However given that it is "tactical" and endorsed by the cockwomble himself it must be good.

Roy you should be ashamed at your cynicism.

This is just a guess but I'm thinking military types sometimes need to see things in dark places, the tactics they employ to achieve this is to use a torch - therefore the torch they use is 'tactical'.

Impressive levels of BS in that advert. Stock photo of Bear Grylls holding a different torch (the neck is a different shape and there's no branding) in an effort to imply the words are his. The claim that it is "the same technology used by elite British forces" is true, but it's also the same technology used by old ladies trying to find something in the cupboard under the stairs.

I actually have one of the torches in the Alibaba link. I paid £5.99 in an ironmongers when I'd forgotten to take a torch on holiday. It's pretty good for what it is- definitely £5.99 good, maybe even £10 good but certainly not £50 good.

Actually the best pocket torch I have ever had is the one I now use.
It was a gift from HK with a large order, based on a Cree XPG it had a good beam and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually waterproof.

The annoying thing was every time I switched it on it would go into silly flashes. I took it apart and fitted a 7135 based driver which was set to come on at full power and then click down through medium to low. A bit of overdrive off the microcontroller gives 1550 mA on full, naughty, but the LED is still OK.
Nice to be able to switch it on and all it does is work.

I ordered several and converted them for some of my friends. Very light, compact and powerful little torch.

I suspect that the scam torch is very likely a series resistor with a microcontroller or something crude and simple. All of their low voltage lamps are similar. Just for the fun of it I tried an XML on direct drive from a quality Sanyo cell fully charged and got 3.3 amps, it makes one wonder.

I did a strip down evaluation of the £20 torch that started this thread which I will post later.

Biggest porkie yet, keep them coming.
Emitter is stated as "Q5 R2", which is a version of the old XR-E and Cree data sheet gives us 250 lumens at 1 amp.

So the Tony Blair award goes to this seller for his 5000 lumens claim!

Looks a bargain though at £2.99 until you see same again for postage, so its actually £6.

I've had people ring me up hawking solar panels with claims of generated output about as believable. Perhaps if Roy mounted one of these on your helmet as well so the lamp shone on it you could do away with the battery!

Is this the one that keeps showing up on almost every social media web site as a side advert for the most powerful tactical military light every made.

If so I have one in my hand right now which I bought on Ebay for £1.50 inc P&P from China, gives out about 200 lumens max. I only bought it to strip the LED out of it for a project.

So don't be fooled by the ads they are just rebranded shite, listen to Roy he's an expert.

Have to say, I bought a 5W Cree LED 3xC cell torch from Aldi a couple of years ago for back-up / light painting. It focuses from narrow to wide beam. It's got a heavy waterproof stainless steel case and has done stirling service with no probs to date. Think it cost me £18. Note that Lidl have just had a similar torch in but with a 10W Cree for £12.99. The only Achilles heel appears to be the security cord - very thin nylon, mine snapped early on but I had some thin braided stainless wire so replaced it with this attached to a polypropylene cord lanyard clipped to my belt. No disrespect to you Roy but you can find some good lights out there for back-up or light painting. Yours for main lighting of course...

So its my own fault on that part as I should have sent it back when the problem became apparent. Its too late now though!

Why?

Moving back to thread, nothing wrong with £6 torches except when they get rebranded, hyped to the ridiculous, and offered at daft prices such as , what is it, £50?
When you can buy the same thing for the £6 mentioned.

I wouldnt say there isnanything wrong with rebranding thrm and selling them for 50 quid either...

Its all about making money and if someone is daft enough to pay it then more fool them. If you do your research like most people would with any product they will soon realise it3 is the same as a 6 quid unit...

If i could buy something for a quid and sell it for 50 quid each I would be laughing all the way to the bank!

I bought it a year or so ago now so too late to be sent back, which is a pain, but as said its my own fault and definitely not a detriment to you Roy as you offered to resolve it at the time!
