Would the person who failed to identify them-self, please tell me why I should change the the name of Tregonnings shaft to that of New Sump? to the best of my knowledge a shaft name this mine did not possess

As I understand it, Tregoning's shaft was also known as Old Sump/Engine Shaft and then following some firkyfoodling and for reasons either mentioned by Trounson or some other book I have, New Sump was sunk alongside. It is marked on the OS map as "New Shaft". Which I think is the one with that engine house. I'm pretty sure Tregonings/Old sump is nearby in the undergrowth. Both shafts are slabbed over. Dines has no mention of either, but mentions Tregonings (off the top of my head). A plan I have (which sadly can't be copied and slung up) shows New Sump and Old Sump shafts, then Hawke's and West Shaft on North Lode. The other shaft on the strike of that lode, but I'm not sure if it links up or not is Wheal Vor engine shaft......

Hope that helps. Would appreciate knowing if I'm wrong or not. I think the info is in Trounson (Cornwall's Future mines). 99.9% sure. Either that or Acton/Brown's guide.

My plan is lifted from the last working.....I gather. Stu

Acton/Brown has the other engine house, heavily hidden by the undergrowth, just to the east of Old Sump/Engine/Tregoning shaft. They suggest it stands where the Abandoned Mine plans show a whim engine which hauled from New Shaft.
Trounson has Engine Shaft about 700ft east of Richards' Shaft.
Bawden on the other hand referrs to Tregoning and the old pumping plant on Engine Shaft.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Ok, looks like my references and I are wrong. Accept my apologies. Always good to question these things though!

I assumed Engine Shaft was that little circle in the tip (2 o' clock from the "t" of shaft), not that slight "thing" above the E of Engine Shaft. I won't blame myself, I'll blame the mappers. Not clear enough!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
