Can anyone please tell me where the Alfreton Collliery was located I have just moved into the area and we are very interested in the location of the pit head etc., Cannot find any information concerning this site. We have been told that the name Tavistock was something to do with it but why? at the bottom of Meadow lane is a road call Colliery Row and just around the corner another is called Tavistock Square we think that these used to be the houses for the miners and pit bosses but not sure could anyone out there please help. Would be very grateful for any information anyone can give us.

Alfreton colliery is now under what is known as Meadow Lane Industrial Estate...

Cos I'm such a nice person (and nothing to do with its something I'd kept meaning to do) I went and had a look this PM and there is a nice grade 2 listed horizontal engine house with original wood slat roof and the offices and baths also... there is the gatehouse too in use as an office... I'm hoping we can help each other... My mum and dad live and have done for about 25 years in Tavistock House, which was the pit managers house, this is located at the bottom of Colliery Row and at the head of Tavistock Square.

When they brought the house, it was still owned by the Last pit manager by the name of Slater.

We have always thought the house had been around for as long as the pit. But after looking at the map supplied by ICLOK from the 1900's, Tavistock House and Tavistock Square is not on there? We therefore also feel that Tavistock is a integral part of the Pit.

We have also been told by the older residents of Tavistock Square that they remember summer parties being thrown for the miners in the grounds of Tavistock House and that is was very pretty in its hay day consisting of grassed tennis courts and kept flower beds.

I would love to see any photo's anyone may have, also any general information on the pit would be great.

There was a tendency for the collieries to build there own housing and it wasn't always close to the pit as in the case of Blackwell, yes quite often it was but not always as it depended on availability of land, so what you have been told is probably bang on re the parties etc. I have a friend who can poss shed more light on this than I and I'll try and get hold of him.

Hi, Many of my ancestors worked at Alfreton pit from when it was opened until it closed in 1968. My Granddad who lived at Tavistock Square told me that the old and new pits where connected by a very steep incline about 45%. He worked in the 1 foot 9 inch seams for over 40 years. Does anyone know where I can get an underground map of the pit? either the old pit or new pit or both. I have a very basic drawing of it done by my granddad but I would like to see the official map/plan. Thanks
