What I've not found are places offering treatment for the addiction, or is "the best answer to temptation is to submit"??

Just to add fuel to the torch addicts' fires. Just bought an 800 lumens pocket torch, alu body, car and mains charger. All for £7.
Off out now its going dark, its such fun!!!!

Quite by chance today my faithful handlamp of many years has burnt out it's internal charge circuit.
Reading the above thread, I feel I must throw myself at the mercy of the cognisenti to advise on a cheap but powerful new one.

My recently deceased torch was one of the yellow million candlepower things you bought from cheap shops a while ago powered by a small Yuasa rechargable cell with about an hour of light using what appears to be a car foglamp type bulb. It is used for inspecting the roof in high mine roadways that cannot be seen by caplamp during the course of my work.
I am sure that better things are now available but from where and how much please?

It must be reasonably hand portable with maybe a sling or belt clip used for longer carrying journeys. Nothing that requires a wheel barrow etc.
Doesn't have to be water proof but reasonably rugged for a mining environment (no gas problems).

I await your replies with trepidation.........

depends what you want to spend, really. I've used those rubber-cased rechargable hand-lamps for jobs like examing the undersides of platforms 20m above me, which I'd imagine is plenty for your use?



for general inspection work, youcan't beat Wolf lamps. The rechargable ones are a bit expensive but they last for ever - as good as Oldhams, and the dry cell ones are good for most jobs. I assume by 'high roadways' you mean 5m or so?

I've got one of those Raptor cap-lamps, very long throw at the expense of limited spread; got a charger for it that runs off the cigarette lighter in the car and it weighs nothing

I saw some posh torches at the Hillhead exhibition. They were LED based with rechargable batteries but a bit pricey. I am sure similar things must be available cheaper from somewhere, but where??
We are talking up to maybe 7m high roads plus 50 to 100m lengthways to save walking up blind ends etc. Reasonable spread but a soft spot for picking out details.
We use the current design Oldham caplamp so not much use at that range in a dark, matt coloured rock.

the Raptor won't do that, it has about twice the range of an Oldham but the spread is very limited

Wolf lamps are great but I don't know about that kind of throw

don't you have a door-mounted spot on your land rover? I used to use one for working in the drift at Mountfield, setting out roofbolts - it was great

I've just been out on deck with a Wolf XT and you can see the spot quite clearly about 1m across on the fall-pipe rack, and thats 60 metres plus from the wing bridge and there are other lights on deck

Machine Mart list a couple of hand lamps with 100m spots around £30 or slightly over

Sadly I do have to get out and actually walk to some places. I try to avoid it if possible but sometimes a man's got to do etc..
It is only when you go back to bare cap lamps that you realise just how weak they are in my situation.
I have just found a thing called a Lenser X21 which looks awesome - shame it is £240. I could use it to melt holes in the rock.
I am hoping one of the torchaholics will show up soon and tell me about a bazillion watt torch for a fiver.

Good for background illumination so somebody with a WiseLED can do the actual light beam rock drilling :lol: :lol:

Les, have a look on the Fenix web site, some very well made LED torches, much better than the cheaper ebay jobs by far.

These come with belt holsters & are pretty light, but you would need to also purchase the correct rechargeable lion batteries & a charger.

The Fenix TK11 is a spectacular torch for its size. Fits in a trouser or boiler suit pocket easily and by far betters cheaper but bigger torches.

If you're after a Fenix drop Vanoord a PM, he still has most of them in his shop I think.
