This little soul is about 4-6 weeks away from release in the UK and the following seems to be all that's known about it:

The first that I saw and that they demonstrated was their new TK40. It utilizies 8 AA batteries to power the Quad Core Cree LED light. It puts out 630 lumens of light for a little over an hour, but that's not enough. Even now, they are working on a slight up grade which should be out in March and puts out 730 lumens. With an MSRP of roughly $150.00 U.S., it's a lot of light for a great value. If it's anything like some of the previous lights that we have reviewed from Fenix, this could be one of the most exciting LED lights to come out during the SHOT Show.

Looks like it will be a pretty staggering bit of kit: by comparison the Underwater Kinetics Light Cannon 100 (known to a few people on the forum) is quoted at 450 lumens, so this is a lot brighter!

The choice of 8x AA batteries is a bit of a weird one, but it's got the advantage that rechargeables are relatively inexpensive to run once you've bought them.

I wonder if we're starting to see light output reaching a ceiling for underground use?

I'd agree with you there - a 'drop in' Li-ion pack would be a very nice thing to have :)

Mind you... it's arguable that 8x AAs is better than, say, 3x 18650 as those are rather rarer - albeit I currently have 10 18650s and 5 chargers in my office at the moment!

Whilst not many people have chargers for 8x AAs, many will have chargers for 4x AAs, so it's a two hour charge rather than a one-hour charge.

I suppose cost-wise, it's also not a bad decision - 8x 2,700MAh rechargeable AAs would cost around £15, about the same price as an 18650 charger alone.

I suspect the reasoning for making the lamp with AAs may be market-driven, in that the buying public feels happier with AAs rather than something more specialist?

It will depend how high the ceiling (or roof, as we prefer to call it) is, and depending on the condition of the roof, may or may not be a bad thing.

Is this waterproof, or do we still have a use for a light cannon, E.G. lighting deep flooded shafts!

Given that virtually every other Fenix is waterproof, I suspect this will be waterproof as well.

I suspect it's going to have quite an output: Fenix are very good in getting light out of their torches. For example, the Fenix TK10 emits something like 60% light (measured as lux at 1m) than the equivalent Trustfire T1 - despite both using the same Q5 emitter. (R2 editions of each are now available).

There have been a few improvements to the reflector design with the new generation of Fenix torches, which bodes well for the TK40.


Fenix TK 11

I also been trying out the new Fenix TK11 in the last couple of days and the reflector is very different to the TK10, with a significantly longer throw despite using the same emitter.

In a brief comparison, the TK11 throws a distinct and bright spot at around 70m, whereas the Silva Ultra headlamp I was comparing it to was pretty much lost by that distance. Given the TK11 is rated at 225 lumens and the Silva Ultra at 345, that's a pretty impressive achievement!

Conversely, the very tight spot of the TK11 might actually make it less suitable for underground use than the TK10... I'll get the pair of them somewhere underground in the next few days and see if I can compare them properly.

Powering these things are always going to be difficult although I am in full agreement that a dedicated li-po pack would be a boon for extended work UG.

Going totally and unashamedly off topic :offtopic: but who cares. I was going to post this last week but what the hell.

Sitting at home last Saturday night the fireside torpor was rudely interrupted by blue flashing lights filling the room and sending my Bengal cats into a state of taking on all comers with no prisoners. It turns out that our neighbour opposite thought he'd set fire to his chimney. Picking up my WiseLED which was on charge, I ventured out to survey the commotion. You have to appreciate that the road where I live only just separates the stone terraced houses and a Fire Engine parked outside feels akin to it being in the front room. So on opening the front door I was confronted by a couple of Firemen waving Toc H torches skyward to a chimney. Raising my torch skyward and pressing the button not only did I light the scene 😮 but took out the nearest 2 Firemen too :lol:
What the ..............ing is that?? They then proceeded to direct me. All the usual questions were asked afterwards but I doubt they'll get them. Happily the fire was a false alarm.

I have a Ultrafire wf500 at the moment ive binned the high power zenon bulb for a quad core P7 led at 700 lumens its fantastic i can drop it and everything and it still works takes two li-ion rechargeables im not compareing it to anything fenix as ive not yet had the pleasure of owning one but 8 aa's is a little odd 🙂

Agree to a point, but I guess with an average 18650 cell being 2,500mah you've 5,000mah there. Whereas with 8 x 2,850mah AA batteries you've got over four times the capacity.

I like the 18650 as a compact high power cell, but I guess AA has more mass market appeal still.

8 cell chargers aren't impossible to find. I've got one of these and it really is the business for maintaining healthy batteries

It's a real pity Maha don't do LiIon chargers. The quality of their chargers knocks spots of most others.
