Having seen people lighting up slate chambers with LED torches I'm thinking of getting one myself (to use as an addition to my normal Oldham). Candidates are the Fenix P3D CE Cree XRE Q5 and the Trustfire T1 Q5.

Would anyone care to make a recommendation between these two, or suggest alternatives?

Also, does the 18650 Li-Ion battery fit the Fenix P3D?

The 18650 battery doesn't fit the Fenix P3D, it takes two of the CR123 cells, preferably rechargeable ๐Ÿ™‚

Simon - thanks for confirming my suspicions (gained from looking at the spec sheets for the two batteries) on that.

Other than that I dare not respond ๐Ÿ™‚ for fear of being accused of lack of impartiality!

If you want absolute light output, the WiseLED Tactical is the way to go (they won't be on the web site until next week) with 7 x Q5 emitters. The cost however is about the same as the first moon landing.

having used the fenix l2d and found to be very good for duration on original set of batteries. Still trying to use it to light up chambers and adits for photos, some coming out very well and some over exposed.

Fenix are excellent. I have not heard any poor comments about them, neither have i heard about one going faulty!

Fenix is the way to go forsure.

I believe that Petzl's have a mountain biking torch which would fit the bill.

I saw it in use at the weekend and was impressed. Turn the power down and it's a headtorch - up and it's a shaft-buster.

Drop it on the floor & it's shagged!

I wouldn't recommend anything from Papzl as their all sh1te, it's a well known fact that they are made out of recycled Citroen Saxo's & string

OK, I think I get the idea that the Fenix is probably the one to go for ...

Next question - reflector: smooth or textured?

I have one of each and to be honest, I really see much, if any difference !

Textured is more diffused than the smooth reflector which is very focussed. Which in turn makes the smooth reflector version great as a spotter lamp.

I've not used the textured version in anger but I think a few people on here have either the textured version of both, so might be able to comment on real world difference.

If you're intending to use it extensively then do get hold of a set of rechargeables for it, a charge does me a full trip of using it as a spotter / light painting torch.
