When was the vandalising of the howler slade tram way, why was this national heritage destroyed. When I was a lad all the stone pillows were in place. On my last visit they had been disturbed and pine trees planted where the track was. Any info please

I think it has been like this for quite a number of years. There are still quite good remains of the tramway in Wimberry Slade, just one valley up from Howlers.
And of course Bixslade still has its tramway pretty much in tact.
If you go to Gloucester Docks they have a replica tram wagon, which although is based on the Cheltenham and Gloucester tramway, would have looked much like those in the Forest.

Thank you for your info. Being now in Australia, I will never visit them, but will search them out on survey maps.

Sort of good news/bad news on the Bixlade front. Yes the track pillows are still in place but since the FC in their 'wisdom' diverted and 'touristified' the path away from the route of the tramway the location of the sleepers is increasingly hard to follow through the undergrowth.

There's a very good tramway with most of the track pillows intact, that runs from Oakwood Bottom (SO 59972 06300) to SO 59535 06587. The track continues to SO 58875 06777, but the pillows there have gone, and the FC are busy felling. That bit is a mess.
Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound
So follow me down Cousin Jack
