Nimrod your ifomation.
the mine is in fact a flag mine with a grid referance of SD986887.
T least my family think its here.
It was quarried as well as mined, but the mine section is huge!
don't go yet, I need to confirm.
p.s. have you ever met David Kay, he is my grandad, and seems to recognise your real name.
He was the one who dug out Buckden Gavel, and found a dead body inside.

Thanks for the info, it certainly looks worthy of a visit.
A little more info on the body :

I think its the body, though my grandad DID NOT go to Birmingham universety nor did his friend. Although David and his friend richard found it, the archeologisets were probably called in to finish the job!

When the body was found, it was found in backfilling in the mine's upper areas. The body still had it's boots on, and was dressed quite well.
David has a image of it somewhere, I will try and dish it out! :glare:

I need to visit some more metal mines, I've only had an afternoon at Coniston, ***** End side (hospital Level) took the right tunnel, not left, after looking at Blue Quarries. Blue Quarries are very interesting, but little remains. We've been looking at some of the warton crag iron mines, have you? 😉

We're actually ascending Ill Bell tommorow, which has some stuff on it!! 😉

Yeh, back to the original topic!! - A small group of us had a ascent of three bells, a mountain near Kentmere today. On the Troutbeck side were some interesting, but old slate workings, one had a massive cave twll opening into a quarry! 😉
I'm off now!

An interesting thought has just appeared in here??
Would you class Burtersett Mine as slate, or what.
According to the website, and some other sources it appears to have worked slate & sone, which presumably means: slaty/shaly rock, which can be rived, though on the pics it is through limestone.
http://fp.woodwardsplace.plus.com/North%20Yorkshire%20Area+Mines/Burtersett%20Mines.htm
Anyone got any ideas?

Pointed to Nimrod:
I know you've looked around Coniston (copper) many times, for obvious reasons:- what I'm interested in is if you've ever visited blue quarries in the coppermines valley, not far from the road leading to the base of the Triddle Incline & Bonsor east & west shafts in the coppermines.
I was told it be in three main sections, high, middle, band low. The middle one has a cave in the rear, which a certain relitive wants to rope down into. Ever been?

Good weather actually 😉
As well as visiting Old Man, we (me. Allan & mi amigo Frank) went to Cove quarry. Not much to see here underground, all collapsed save two levels, though it is an impressive size!
My dad is now keen on going to the nearby and ancient godlscope cave quarry.
