Has anyone been underground here?
Interesting surface walk in the Rheidol gorge recently. The 40' wheelpit is very impressive indeed, other interesting stuff as the buddles, leats etc.

The adits have been gated, one most definitely permanently secured ( extremely dangerous perhaps?) The others are accessible; evidence of renovations in one ( cement bags in the entrance).
I'm curious as to what's underground; anyone with experience of exploring ?

There are three adits. the two upper adits lead only to a sudden drop into the main stope and have been permanently grilled.

The bottom adit that is in the back of the wheelpit is gated but not locked and access is through Cave Access Ltd.

For a permit. As its a nature reserve there is no access in the bird breeding season.

I dont know about the cement bags but expect that they are there for intended remediation work on the wheel pit that badly needs attention. CAL remit only covers the underground.

I did a lot of work in there about 3 years ago, which included minor consolidation work on the wheelpit (hence the cement bags), also bolting up the stopes and rises. It was part of my research for my book on the mines of the Rheidol valley (Rich Mountains of Lead) which was published in 2018 - that contains the full history and many photographs of the underground workings at Temple. 4 adits - two grilled, one gated, one open.

Am I right in assuming that the fixed rope leading up to the middle level from just beyond the rising main was rigged by you and so is about 3 years old? The blue tape sling on the deviation seems to be of, er, greater vintage! ;-)

I expect that an aluminium extending ladder played a key role in setting up the rigging.

Is there much to see on the middle level and does it connect with the stope which extends to the upper level?
