In 1993 Simon Hughes, author of British Mining no. 17 "The Cwmystwyth Mines", had a second edition printed with an extra page of introduction giving an update on the site, and text on the bottom left of the cover stating that it was in aid of the Hafod Church Restoration Fund.

I have two copies of the 1993 edition. One has a somewhat greyish cover photos and the other has a much more distinctly black and white version of the same photo. The second copy has a xerox of Gus Horsley's "Caver's Guide to Cwmystwyth" and his survey of Lefel Fawr and Kingside Adit loosely inserted. Gus's guide and survey were originally published in Teifi Valley Caving Group Journal no.1, 1988.

I don't know whether my copy with Gus's guide and plan is a one-off insertion by a former owner, or whether lots of copies were sold with them inserted but I *think* that I once saw another copy with Gus's guide and survey inserted - which suggests that lots of copies were sold with them inserted.

Please could aditnow members check their 1993 copies and let me know whether their copies do, or do not, have Gus's guide and plan inserted in them?

Might be best to pm me via aditnow.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help!

Mine has the survey but not the guide.

Thanks for checking; this is good evidence for a second 1993 (or slightly later) impression with Gus's material inserted by the publisher.

Did you buy it new or second hand? - I'm wondering about the possibility of a previous owner having lost the guide which is six sides of A5.

Is the cover photo distinctly greyish-and-white, or more definitely a bold black-and-white?

Sorry - I am mistaken. The map to which I refer is actually in an original 1981 edition! albeit inserted separately.

The front cover of the 1993 version has many shades of grey, with the title in red.

Mine was 2nd hand - almost certainly purchased from Mike Moore at a NAMHO Conference somewhere.

Chris.

Thanks for clarifying details of your copies.

Any other aditnow members possess copies of the 1993 edition?

I have a copy of the 1993 edition (purchased second hand from the estimable Mr Moore) - but without the inserted Caver's Guide or surveys.

Hi, I have one of these reprints, with the greyish (low contrast) photograph and red title. It doesn't have any inserts. I bought this new from an office on the North Parade in Aberystwyth in about 1998-99. I was told that it was a limited print run (I think Ystwyth Books put me on to it) that had recently been done. This seems to fit with the idea of another later edition.

I checked my 1981 copy, it does not contain any u/g plans.
Can only assume that these were added at the reprint stage.
Nor does the index list any such item.
The only 'plans shown are 3 which are in fact interpretations of the surface mine features.Scaled at 200 ft to the inch,
No metrication here!

Thanks for checking. Gus's guide and survey were originally published in Teifi Valley Caving Group Journal no.1, 1988, so they post-date the first edition of BM17.

Thank you for letting us know. Do they have a distinctly greyish cover photo, or a more defionately very black-and-white cover photo?

on balance black&white albeit not of highest contrast

my copies came straight from the original printers (Repro 2000) who did not put inserts of any description therein. I suspect inserts must have come from intermediaries.

Thank you - a consistent picture builds of there having been two impressions of the 1993 edition. The first with a somewhat greyish cover photo and no inserts, and the second, somewhat later in date, with a much more distinctly black and white cover photo and inserts comprising xeroxes of Gus Horsley's "Caver's Guide to Cwmystwyth" and his survey of Lefel Fawr and Kingside Adit loosely inserted. Gus's guide and survey were originally published in Teifi Valley Caving Group Journal no.1, 1988.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
