WORK has begun on a two year project to reduce pollution to the River Ystwyth from Frongoch metal mine, near Aberystwyth.

To begin with, Environment Agency Wales will construct a surface water drain around the mine, which will direct water to a new pond.

This will reduce the amount of water that flows through contaminated mine waste, control the amount of water that leaves the site and help to keep the clean water separate from the contaminated mine water.

It is the first phase of the project which aims to help achieve Good Ecological and Chemical Status within the River Ystwyth catchment, in line with strict European Water Framework Directive standards.

Once this initial phase of the programme has been completed, a second phase will follow in 2014, which will involve capping the mine waste and creating a new wetland area to further purify the water flowing from the site.

The project is being delivered in conjunction with the Coal Authority, and is due to be completed by December 2015.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
