It seems that the pollution problem with Youd's level is reoccurring - some friends of mine did the through trip a few days ago, only to find that the sough now is ankle-deep in raw sewage which has also attracted rats. The problem has been reported to both the EA and the DCA so hopefully this will be fixed quickly, but can anyone thinking of doing this trip in the near future bear this in mind, especially if there's been a lot of rain to increase the water levels.....

It just shows that the pollution problem has never really been dealt with, as my last trip up & back down the sough would have been circa 1988 & it wasn't too nice then, certainly had to wash off in the river.
The management thanks you for your co operation.

It got _really_ foul last year and it seems it's got to that state again, but the EA do take an active interest if raw sewage starts finding its way into the Derwent. Hopefully, they'll investigate again and get the sewage to stay in the sewers.

I just wish they'd re-route the storm drains that feed into Long Tor grotto, and back up in the mine courtesy of Severn Trent having had the bright idea of raising the level of the outflow - to get in, you now have to wade through stinking black water and mud that's between knee and waist deep:glare:

Keys will reportedly (by DCA) no longer be issued by PDMHS for the "manhole" entrance, untill the problem is resolved.
I recall doing the trip about '92 - it stank & there was pink bog roll washing towards the outlet - not nice in a crawl, yeuk!
