I never kept a log of how many trips I've done to Longcliffe during the lifespan of the project, but it would be well over a hundred, with at least half underground - I was generally one of the haulers when we were still emptying the shaft. But I like the familiarity of repeat visits as you get to know a place really well and inevitably start to find more detail and understand the structure better (and maybe find more leads) as a result.

Paradoxically there are many places I probably shouldn't go to again, simply as there's not much to be gained for the effort - other than another dose of radon, which is very high in the northern catchment where I am, and is increasingly something I'm bearing in mind, apart from coronavirus!

ttxela - I should have pointed out more clearly (I was typing in haste whilst on the phone!), that I was referring to myself considering trips, not whether you should be - I hope you didn't take it the wrong way and sorry if it came across like that. I've done most local sites to death, so I'm trying to concentrate on project work as a priority now. And hopefully doing more surface work soon - though real actual work is finally resurfacing again, so I could be out of action for a while yet anyway :(

Good lord no, I'm not that sensitive.

Everyone has their own criteria to judge the worth of a trip. My point was that really the value of a jolly day out is not to be underestimated even if the trip has no other merits.

Anyhow, probably the first step is to assemble some sort of working vehicle from the collection of partial ones on my drive

Hahah, good luck! I finally managed the bus a few times last week, after three months walking only - rebuilding and pointing a shaft top near Bradwell, so it was (kind of) work. They're not asking to see wage slips on the bus luckily as I didn't get any wages! But I was the only person on it most of the time.

That project will be revealed shortly, no doubt.

Well, I have still not ventured underground, mainly now due to other interests taking up most of my free time at the moment.

Has everyone else pretty much returned to normal yet.....?

I have been going twice a month travelling with the same friend and only meeting in groups of less than 5 not stopping at any shops no pub time afterwards either and trying to avoid touching any objects as much as possible ie gates padlocks have been wearing gloves and following guidelines as much as possible but at same time trying to regain some normal life

I am currently looking at collieries local to where I live. I have never had much interest in the past, dont know why. Started during lockdown with one about 100 yards from my home.
Been to Wales a few times.

I dont think that we shall be back to the 'old' normal for quite some time. cases currently rising again, gives cause for concern.

Not underground yet, but spent alot of time just looking at the surface stuff near to home which has brought up things I've not noticed before.

Since the end of lockdown I have been extremely active underground. My chums and I have just managed to dig our way through a four metre long roof fall, accessing a large section of mine nobody has entered since the passage collapsed in the late 1980s. Tomorrow a couple of us are planning to climb a nicely draughting stope. All in all very exciting! 😉

First trip out last night; a 3k walk then waded into an adit with a dead sheep in it.
Business as usual then ::)

I still remember you showing us with great relish that small site that was ripe with rotting sheep :surrender:

Can't recall the name but it was essentially a largish stope breaking out to surface and we slid down a slope on a rope into the ever increasing stench of death! I recall you generously offering the opportunity to take as long as we wanted to take photos, I may even have held my camera dutifully behind me one handed and clicked the shutter as I scrambled rapidly back up trying to hold my breath

I once abseiled down a shaft and there was a terrible smell at the bottom. Looked all around me to try and locate source only to realise that I was standing IN a dead dog! Never did find where the crawl beyond went.
