I was out walking today and wandered up to a disused mine shown on os maps on scarrowmanwick fell and can't find anything out about it, theres a partly blocked off adit next to a pheasant run and that's about it, it's quite near a disused quarry. Does anyone have an information about it?

a slight confusion of names here. Burnt Edge Colliery is in the Lancs area near Bolton. The mine in question is Burned Hill Mine and was a small scale operation done by the men working the nearby Clint Quarries in the 19th century and who lived in cottages nearby (now long gone ) and would be for domestic use.

Out of interest, the name Scarrowmanwick Fell means Scary Man Place Hill. Apparently the name refers to a local vampire legend of a demon that appeared as a man and sucked the blood of travellers. May well have been a story put about to stop people stealing from the mines ;o)

The vampire was possibly the Croglin Vampire just up the road.

Yes, surely connected. Croglin is the village at the foot of Scarrowmanwick. There have been vampire like legends around there for centuries (possibly many centuries). These were popularised in the 1800’s by a novel set in Croglin Grange. But the author was simply rehashing the local legends rather than creating a new story.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
