It's not the best entrance in my opinion, not for a 6ft1 bloke anyway! The entrance on the left far side of the workshop barn area which is now welded shut was much easier to walk through without the back ache 🙂 This was the first mine i ever visited absolutely by chance, caught the bug and never looked back 🙂

As in the entrance that DCA recently installed a combination lock on so that it could actually be used by anyone obtaining the code from Joe?

Didn't know about the combi lock, last time I visited we entered the carpet entrance, then went to exit the far end, got the metal sheet that covers the entrance and it was welded shut? Had to return the way we came.

I guess this was in the process of being combi-locked? I know that access was sensitive with Hall at the time, so I assumed it was just to stop generally entry.

We also found a chamber where you can dangerously crawl through a fall to the outside, somewhere near the quarry a little further up the hill? Has this been fixed as it was awfully unstable and no doubt would make the unknown explorer curious and probably hurt them afterwards.

Ah, you mean the old Oil Drum exit that was forever being broken into by kids. Chatsworth asked us to seal that one so we did. Thought you were referring to the other ent in the brick yard.

Now all is clear!!
I know this place pretty well & couldn't figure out which was "the carpet entrance."
I made the gate & frame for this entrance in 1997. (I'm supposed to have a copy of the combination, as agreed by Pete Mellors btw)
Anyway, the blockwork was done by an old school friend & bricky. He'd had to finish work, due to worsening MS & this was his last "hurrah".
We had to hold onto his legs as he layed the last courses, to stop him falling of the plank he was on. We left him sat on his plank later while we started tidying up & when we came back, he's fashioned the "door mat" with left over compo.
So by the sound of things, the entrance is named after is his efforts - magic!!!!

Interesting stuff. Is the drum exit bricked up as I thought I see it from inside. Joe said the carpet entrance is only one for now, I like it as I'm 5ft nothing ??

Yep, welded shut and then cemented over before finally facing with dry stone to give a nice look. Several days of my (and others') life but pleased with the resulting landscaping. To be honest, the roof there was lethal looking and we're well shot of that entrance. The other gated one is much better and less than 50m away in the quarry, so nothing lost really.
