Prompted by a discussion going on over at UKC.

Something we should be aware of but not get too worked up about.

I suppose I could look, but what is the opinion on UKC? My partner, a vet, is more concerned about me being rabies than anything else. I think possibly as displacement activity more than real concern...

My guess is unless you are going out of your way to ‘touch’these creatures, the chances of you getting bitten, are pretty low!
I think that the Scottish case which unfortunately resulted in a guy’s death, was a bat enthusiast, of some description.
Presumably he not cover himself up enough and paid the ultimate penalty!

The man who died from contracting rabies from a bat in Scotland was a friends dad. He was a wildlife enthusiast as well as being an artist / photographer. He'd been painting and surveying bats for about 3 years, this did involve catching and holding them.
Just bad luck as he'd been bitten before, I've been bitten a couple of times, so far no foaming at the mouth or fear of water 😉

I've uploaded the text of an email from the Bat conservation trust on the subject.

Minerals:
are the building blocks of rocks. They are a naturally occuring, inorganic, solid, crystalline substance which has a fixed structure. (and some of them are really pretty)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
