I am new to this, only joining this week, so if the subject has been done to death. I apologise.

My son wants to start collecting one or two. We have looked at the evil bay, where there are many.

There is quite a difference in price, are some more collectible than others.
Thank you for any advice.

Hi,

Just a word of caution. You need to be really careful when buying mining tallies especially those from the Welsh collieries which are very desirable. In particular those ones dated before 'vesting day' 1.1.1947 when they were all taken over by NCB and these are not so desirable. The pre 47 ones are often found to be faked. Try to get them from a reputable dealer. It's a lot of money to shell out when some guy has just knocked it up in his garden shed.

Thanks for your advice.

Thinking about it, I suppose it wouldn't take much
to knock one up.
We will proceed with caution.

Some good advice there, there is indeed someone knocking them up in his shed, he was at one time a member of this forum although I've not seen a post from him for several years. He even managed to produce the embossed style of check, although they wouldn't pass close scrutiny.
I guess the best thing is to build a collection starting with the cheaper more common checks, rare ones can run into three figures.
The last time I saw fakes on eBay, they started at a tenner, stay below that for a bit and you should be okay.

I've seen a few of those polo checks on ebay but they often looked dinged and appear to have had a very hard life. The nearly always appear to come from very obscure and short lived Welsh collieries. The bad condition I guess is to create the impression that they maybe genuine rather than looking too perfect. As for the old patina that's easy enough just bury em in the back garden for a while. 🙂

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
