I don't know if anyone's been looking at the new series on Yesterday (Tuesdays 8pm). They did a bit on a dam in Italy (Vaiont Dam) which didn't fail but the surrounding rock did under hydrostatic pressure causing a huge piece of the surrounding mountain to fall into the lake causing a tsunami which killed 2000 people.

The dam is still there undamaged. However I noticed on the shots of the dam looking downstream that there were a number of entrances in the cliffs roughly level with the top of the dam.

Anyone any idea what they might be?

It's a road tunnel.

I'll take your word for it, thank link won't work on my pc at work. There are holes on both sides of the valley some of which are round rather than square

It's just a google maps link to inside the road tunnel. If you look at the picture you linked, and (when you can) the fencing in some of daylight windows in the tunnels, it matches up.

It wants to turn into a mail link for some reason. If you strip off the "mailto:" and insert a colon after the "https" it works.

Yup, I don't know why AN wants to parse it as an email link, it's pasted as a URL. I suspect Simon will sort it out quick-sharp.

If you move along the tunnel to the next window you can see a memorial and a lot of smaller plaques on the wall.
Sounds like a good series this

It is a VERY good series, excellent in fact....and that is coming from a person who generally thinks that television is a brain sucking, soul destroying work of Satan.

Another good one is 'Impossible Railways'.

Same here. We're all becoming armchair blacksmiths in our house. You can hear shouts of "It's not hot enough to quench" and similar advice from us when it's on.;D

As for television being 'the brain sucking, soul destroying work of Satan', I think cartoonist Robert Crumb, has it neatly sewn up in this sketch.
