Its a difficult one as they are all fairly close together, the main sites being #1 Castle Hill, including Singer Cavern, Dark or 144 or Murchisons Cavern , Mudhole Cavern, Bearpit, and some other. #2 CastleFields with nothing remaining, #3 Wrens Nest including the west mine (Severn Sisters), and east mine, and Mons Hill. The last was a particularly exiting place to visit in my teens, the hill was riddled with workings of which nothing remains today. Unfortunately non of the excellent books I mention gives map references, and I do not have local OS maps.
There is an issue here as in the event all the mines were put in seperately they would become scattered and as such disassociated from each other. I think that the best logical course of action would be to put all pictures and documents together under "Dudley" and maybe put in the seperate mines with a reference "See under Dudley Limestone Mines" if this can be done.
There were also workings more local to me beneath Church Hill in Walsall centre, also under Littleton Street Walsall, and Linley Caverns near Aldridge. Most have now been infilled as the word "Limestone" became a new swear word a few years ago, similar to the word "Kalashnikov" after Hungerford. This was due to a local panic, exagerated out of all proportion, under the heading of "Limestone Blight" were a lot of people imagined their homes disappearing into the ground. The slightest settlement crack would be viewed with disproportionate alarm.
As I have commented before, the worst loss to me was that of the 144 cavern. There is nothing above it only woodland, it was a fantastic place, and infilling was opposed by many including the Canal Trust. The Seven Sisters had become very unstable with pieces dropping from the roof and it was understandably considerd a risk. Of course, as with all of these places, money becomes available to destroy but not preserve. Hopefully this will change.
