I've had a great time exploring surface features, and I'm curious if anyone knows some good underground sites to explore. Ideally somewhere that can be explored safely with just a hardhat and a torch.

Tyneside/Northumberland area.

Welcome :)

Judging by your UserName you have the basics :)

Perhaps you should change it to:

"MagliteAndHardhatAndBackupTorchAndPairOfGlovesAndChangeOfSocks".... then you would be covered! ;)

Tyneside/Northumberland outside of my area I'm afraid but there are plenty of others on here who can advise :flowers:

Important to realise that there is no such thing as Underground Exploring Safely. All mines are inherently dangerous albeit the extent of that danger varies considerably. If you want some non technical (no rope work) mine exploration in the North East, your best bet is probably Smallcleugh at Nenthead. Smallcleugh is where many local mine explorers start their journey into the underworld. I wouldn’t recommend solo exploration (albeit did it for years myself) as there is safety in numbers (although Covid risk mitigation might run contrary to that general rule). Suggest you don’t visit Nenthead until the local residents are ready to welcome visitors and COMRU (The mine rescue team) are back to some type of normal cover.

I heartily agree with Peter, i joined a Society over 50years ago in order to discover what is involved in mine exploration! i am still a member of that organisation.
you are very fortunate inliving close to one of the better areas of the country forcarrying out such program, so why not have a go?

Know any decent local groups I could have a talk with then? I wouldn't know where to start looking.

hi the obvious one is the Nenthead mine research society.
sadly as has been pointed out earlier due to lockdown they are not doing too much at the minute, but once the lockdown is finished then. things will change!

Would CAT be interested in a new fellow?

Thing is, we all getting older, we do need new young people who are keen.

Hi Foy I had considered suggesting CAT but the trip from the North east to Coniston where lots of things are done is a bit off putting! It would be easier in my opinion to just end up at Nenthead,
Regards, and keep safe, John lawson

I am young and very keen have had a Good few hundred hours of underground experience I live in the East Midlands but more than happy to travel to meet up and join groups so when things are back to normal if any groups on here are looking for new members please let me no I normally travel with two friends so would be 3 of us we lack srt skills but love crawling getting filthy head to toe !

Would love to get involved with some work inside trying to find new roots don’t mind helping out with clearing blocked passages etc
