Using the lockdown to exercise around my local neighbourhood. Not much info around Hedley Park Colliery, Hyons Wood and the Durham Riding mineshaft sunk in the 1930s. The mine survived into NCB era. Hyons Wood is littered with old workings, abandoned cable, earthworks dating back to the earliest days of Industrial Revolution including waggonways.

When we lived in Greenside and the kids were biddable (30 years ago) Sunday walks through Prudhoe Woods were made much more fun wandering about the dilly lines. I even had a full day with the hound meandering from Greenside via Reeley Mires (an interesting esker to track as well) to Prudhoe up to Leadgate through Chopwell Woods and over to Thornley Bank mainly on coal lines.

You will find that there are several local AditNow types who are keen on coal mining remains.

cheers. Elsewhere on this site there’s a document describing the massive drift that extends from West Wylam all the way to Leadgate under Stanley Burn. 11ft wide, 6ft high! And the crazy shaft dug in that Durham Riding field just to move Hedley coal to the West Wylam screens is amazing. NLS Maps website shows so much but not found any photos or accounts of working Hedley Park yet.
